Which Camera to Buy? Canon Rebel XTI or Nikon D40X
Which camera should I get between the Canon Rebel XTI or Nikon D40X. We will mostly be shooting outside sports(baseball, soccer). Also we will use the standard lens that comes with the kit for the beginning. Which should I get?..

Nikon. Kit lens is better.Don't wait for the Nikon D-whatever, have fun now!http://www.flickr.com/photos/j_wijnands/..

Is that the only reason to go with the D40X?..

I went through the same selection process a few weeks ago and I ended up going with the D40x. Here's why I did....

1. Better Lens (in my opinion)2. D40x felt better in my hands3. Focus assist lamp outside of flash4. D40x with 18-135 was a bit cheaper and I liked it better anyway.

If you are going to be shooting live sports, you will not be happy with the kit lenses on either camera. You will at a minimum want a lens that goes out to 135 mm and probably more like 200-300mm..

I shoot my daughter playing softball and often wish I had a little more reach from my 18-135mm...

After a little bit of using the camera(canon rebel xti) I was going to purchase this lens.

300mm with no IS...FUN!.

Have you gone and held either of the two? Most people, even the ones that own it, dislike the way the Canon fits in their hand. Hold it for a good hour at least and see if your hand cramps up. Mine did after only 30 minutes. That was enough to stop me from going with Canon..

Oh and Nikon has an equivalent to that lens (70-300mm no IS/VR) that can be had for less..

Http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...359-USA/Nikon_1928_Zoom_Telephoto_AF_Zoom.htmlOr buy the import version for $120..

And if you compare the VR/IS versions of those lenses the Nikon will be cheaper as well...

To the mix. What are your impressions based on the 5 options. I want IS but still am not so sure which is better, body or lens. I know body is cheaper, Sony does not have a lot of lenses yet....D80 seems like the right option but I also want 18-200 or 18-300 for sports. All seem to have similiar FPS so not much of an issue there. The lenses is where I have the most difficult time in selecting which to purchase and why.

The FPS even in burst does not follow sports as well as I would like or flying birds...

I like the telephoto and wide angle for what Iwant to shoot, sports, nature and can use my Sony DSC-H5 for any ofthe standar things I want to do.

In addition to the above, I am going to Europe next year and will need a camera with good ISO without the capability of using flash with good EV range. Seems like the D80 for that is the way to go to limit noise and has good ev range, +/- 5 versus +/- 2 if my memory serves me well...

There are a few good reasons that the D40 (and D40X) are leading the sales figures. Many of them are posted above..

Will you be shooting at night or only day games?..

UPDATE: I went to best buy and put both cameras in my hand and the Nikon felt much better than the canon. But when I pushed the shoot button on the cameras it seemed like the canon was faster than the nikon even though they both shoot 3 frames per second. Should I judge how fast it is to what the specs say or the sound?..

First, I'm glad you took the advise and put both in your hand. This will make things a lot easier for you..

Second, there are a few things that can effect the speed. First the battery life. If the battery is not fully charged then it won't operate at it's peak. Second is the quality of the image you were shooting. Were you shooting RAW on one and JPEG on the other? Also the Canon XTi can shoot at 10MP meaning a large file size then the 6MP Nikon D40 (which I assume is what we are talking about?). So really the Nikon should write faster.

The Nikon D40 will shoot 2.5fps. The Canon XTi shoots at 3fps. So yes The Canon should shoot at a faster rate. What is nice about the D40 is the buffer size. It is so large that you can use rather cheap SD memory cards instead of the super fast cards and still shoot JPEGS at 2.5fps until your card is full. The Canon shoots at a faster 3fps but the buffer will hit it's limit around 30 pictures I believe when shooting JPEG and then stop, wait 6 seconds, and then start shooting another set of 9, then another pause, etc.

Also the D40 (and D80) are slightly faster to startup and do some things in reviewing modes and such..

Here is the Canon XTI page you should read:http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos400d/page12.aspFor the D40:http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/page13.aspFor D80:http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond80/page12.asp.

Also the D40x and D80 shot at 3fps like the XTi. So if those were the ones you were looking at then they are taking pictures at the same speed as the XTi and something was defenitly different in settings/battery/card. If you are just mistaken and though that the D40 was 3fps then the explanation is up there...

We were looking at the D40X I think my family decided to go with the D40X from B&H..

Thanks..

Do I need to get a uv filter to protect my lense? Also Since this will be used for sports, how fast should I get my SDHC card?..

I got this SDHC memory cardhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227235.

Is this fast enough for sports?..
