SLRs can be film based or digital. But DSLRs are only ... well, you get the idea...
That's the only difference?ok..
Now can you recommend a good one to me?..
I've been to Alaska a few times, but never on a cruise ship. So I don't feel comfortable making a recommendation. But you'll soon find most people on the forum are not so hesitant. Also, you don't really say if you're interested in a film SLR or a digital SLR. I assume the latter, since you're posting on a digital forum. Shop around, handle a few cameras, shoot some sample pics, and listen to recommendations. But, final version, make your own choice, not necessarily what seems good to others...
So I don't intend to be insulting, but bear in mind that you're talking about a camera for what may be a once in a lifetime trip. If you don't know the difference between a DSLR and and SLR, I'd be very concerned about your ability to successfully shoot with one..
Preserve your vacation memories with an easy to use film or digital point and shoot, or even a disposable point and shoot..
Then get your DSLR and practice, practice, practice before your next cruise...
I'm looking for a digital.i've been using compact point and shoots forever.don't worry, there will be lots of practicing prior to the trip...
Then get yourself a decent DSLR now. There are so many choices. I can't tell you which one is best for you but I chose a Canon 350D and I'm happy with it. Really almost any DSLR will get you decent pics if you learn to use it right. There are some new ones with stabilization built into the body now. If you have no idea what that means you've got a lot of reading to do.
Good luck. Sorry can't get into it further now but try clicking the Learn / Glossary link on this site if you haven't already. Or just find a site that will address the basics. It's just too much to type right now all the basic stuff you'll have to learn to know what you're doing to pick a DSLR and lenses let alone use one...
