Hi Wayne,.
I just got a Canon SD900 in May as my point & shoot. I really like it! It's grainy at high ISO, but I sort of expect that from a P&S so I wasn't too concerned. Not sure if this means anything to you, but it takes 1024x768 video clips as well, and that's a real plus. I think it's a 10 mp, but I could be wrong on that..
Pictures are very nice and it's so small and simple to use..
Just my recommendation, you're sure to get others as well! .
Steph, the BWAC!http://www.pbase.com/stephaniedavis'Shine! Show 'em what you've got, let them wish that they were notOn the outside lookin' bored!'..
I had never looked up the price on that til now wow. I won't be picking up one of those anytime soon. I bet they're nice but I'm looking for something I won't freak if I dropped it off the side of a boat..

I've been disappointed with my last two digital Point-and-shoots Ipurchased as convenient anywhere cameras. The first was a SonyP-200 (consistantly got wb wrong, pics grainy) and my current one - aCasio EX-Z75 is very grainy above iso 100 (but it's sure easy tocarry)..
What's a good compromise? When I first started in digital I had abig Olympus 1.2 mp camera that took fantastic images. I don't carefor megapixels I'd much rather have a good 5mp camera than onethat shoots 7mp but none are worth keeping..
Anyone have a favorite PS camera they can recommend? My desire iscompact, long battery life and great images over bulky, high megapixor poor image quality..
Thanks,Wayne.

The presently reigning monarch of P&S country is the Fujifilm F31fd. Indeed, the hard part is finding a valid reason for buying anything else !! .

Main benefit? ... Much lower noise at higher ISOs.
Main snag?... No eye level veiwfinder... just the LCD [2-1/2" very clear and sharp].
Regards,Baz..
Fair enough, but it would survive almost anything else that other cameras won't..
There's a new Samsung model that is much cheaper and looks quite up to the task. Won't compare to Leica glass, though..

Yes, I do want it to be compact. I want something convenient enough to have with me at all times. I need something that allows me to participate in the action (such as Disney World, etc) with my family rather than be sidelined watching stuff or getting irritable with a sweaty strap around my neck. The fuji mentioned below looks good...
This looks good. The low noise at 400 is very good. And 1600 isn't bad at all. It's a bit boxy but I'd take image quality over size as long as it fits neatly in a case on my belt..
And I like the sensor size. I don't really need anything over 6mp for a camera I'm using for recording personal images. I'm going to check it out..
Thanks,Wayne.

The Canon sd630 has been a very convenient and great camera when I don't want to lug around the d2x with a 2 lb piece of glass to the beach. I consider it a great point and shoot because I can hand it to almost anyone and they can take a decent photo without messing with any of the settings..
My point and shoot will never need to do anything spectacular, because the pictures will never turn out that nice anyway on a tiny sensor. If it is something I really want to put my name on, I will have my dslr, expensive lenses, filters, tripod, etc. anyway...
In January, I bought the Canon A640. I wanted a small, lightweight camera to carry around with me. I have a Canon DSLR and 2 really fine Canon lenses, but for travel I knew I would be unhappy to carry this equipment all day long..
I am thrilled with my A640. It's small, pretty fast, has the tilt lcd screen (which I find invaluable) and most importantly to me, takes excellent quality photos. I researched it on different sites and found that all the reviews were excellent..
Take a look at it. The current price is down from what it originally sold for..

You're welcome. .
I bought one for my grown-up daughter. According to her, the battery life is pretty good, too.... considering that the only means for viewfinding is electric.Regards,Baz..
I was going to pick up the fuji f31 (and I don't think you could go wrong with it). But now I'm looking at the pentax optio A30. It also has a larger-than-normal sensor (like the fuji) and appears to also have very well controlled noise up till iso400 (possibly even better than the fuji), and still useable at iso800. It also seems (from the tests I've seen) to beat out the fuji in terms of detail, contrast and control of CA - a main weakness of the fuji. But the real clincher is that it has true optical IS (not that silly iso boost "is"), which should give at least a stop or two of extra hand-holdability...
I carry a Fuji F31fd (amazing image quality, tank like build quality, shame it takes weird xD card) and a Ricoh R6 (very compact, 28-200mm lens, nice, film-like image quality but best in daylight). The Canon G7 looks interesting too, like poor man's M8 (or sensible man's.).
A..
It will not be for everyone but check out the Sigma dp1. The IQ may well be amazing for a PS camera if you can wait for it's unknown release date...
I'm looking to Fuji F series. F40 or F50. F50 is just announced so I will wait a bit but it looks tempting..

Rumpis :o)..
I've looked online several places. Those that list it show it as out of stock. Does the F40FD measure up?.

I bought my wife a Canon G7 a little while ago so she wouldn't have to carry an SLR to "less formal" events. Takes great pictures, very well built (metal not plastic) with the ISO dial right on top, good optics and a hot shoe. The only thing missing is RAW-and a decent viewfinder...
Pentax Optio w20 or w30. Small, light, waterproof and dustproof. Takes great outdoor snaps and super video...
I love Canon PS cameras. I've owned a couple of them. My next one is the SD850. It has IS and I think that's the right choice. The SD900 has a 10MP sensor but no IS. I would rather have less MP and IS.Frank..
It is a pretty cool little camera! It will never replace an SLR but it is tiny, has a long lasting battery, uses SD AND xD cards, and the quality out of the camera is great. It must be kept at ISO 800 or lower though or it gets pretty bad. Otherwise it is great, it starts up very quickly and has a lot of great features. It can be had for about $200 at B&H.http://www.photobyaaron.com..
Very funny answer. This person is posting in the Beginner forum and you recommend the Leica range finder camera...
I cannot disagree more with you..
I am a digital SLR photographer and recently needed a P&S to carry to a particular event. I was influenced by online reviews into buying a Fuji F31..
Let me state it clearly: it is probably the worst camera I have ever used (as a comparison, my girlfriend's Canon A540, which cost half the price two years ago is way better!).So, what are the problems with the F31? Here comes:.
-highlight clipping (there are actually 2 problems in one here: poor metering and CCD EV range),-whatever people say, noise starts to be a problem already at ISO 200!,-chromatic aberrations, more precisely purple fringing, are very visible,-AF is slow and not precise (as for face detection, it is a joke),.
-very little configuration personalization (and some of the settings get lost every time you power-off),.
-flash output is so ridiculous that most times the camera goes to ISO 800 to compensate..
-no IS (that wouldn't be so bad if Fuji didn't put a shaking hand symbol on a button so you might think it is some sort of IS: actually it is an ISO boost that makes your pictures unusable because of noise!.
-XD memory card: apparently this is the last Fuji camera to use this inferior type of memory.A few bright points, though:-battery life is huge,-the LCD is excellent and more than makes up for the lack of viewfinder,-shutter response is rather brisk,-construction is quite pleasing (even more to the touch: build quality is good)..
I sadly regret buying this camera and have already replaced it with a Canon SD900...
