It's basically a parascope. It'll let you shoot around corners or over the top of a wall or bush. It also makes you look like you're pointing your camera in a different direction then you actually are, like the last poster said..

Exactly..

Used to get candid street photography/portraits would usually be considered acceptable.Used to get photos for illicit purposes(name a dozen), unacceptable.Don't blame the device for the user's behavior.'Be right, fearless, faithfull, and true to others...'T.S. Elliott..

That thing is COOL! Obviously, a lot of people think it's dishonest, but I'm not so sure. I often innocently try to take candids, and I'm not that good at it, lol. I would never take a shot of someone that I would be ashamed or 'careful' to show anyone, ever. I would use it for um, 'innocent' candids..

These days, you can hardly take photos anywhere without needing permission, or a permit, whatever ... this thing would be SO fun, and you can have one for only $75 bucks as another poster commented. I wonder how much the image is degraded?.

It is pretty hysterical that she is taking a photo of HIM..

I know there have been times on the beach that I wanted to take a some photos, but at the time a bunch of bikini's would go walking by and I didn't bother taking them for I didn't want to come across as a pervert. That's even though I wasn't go to take a picture of them, but all they would see is a barrel of my lens pointing in their direction and ASSUME that I was taken picture of them. Heck one time I almost got pummeled by a guy who was 6 foot + (I'm 5' 4") who thought I was taking pictures of his girlfriend. The only thing that saved me was when I showed him my pictures in the viewfinder of ships going by of the ocean and not one picture of his girlfriend. A device like that could be either used for good or bad, but I doubt that I could get the pictures that I want with something like that...

Creepy I can understand, and because it's a feeling undebatable. But, Could you explain why it's dishonest?.

Dishonest seems to imply that something isn't represented properly. Is the image you get somehow falsified? Is camoflage dishonest when taking wildlife pictures?'Be right, fearless, faithfull, and true to others...'T.S. Elliott..

Good lord are they really still selling those. I remember seeing them many years ago and as far as I can tell they are just for perving on the nudest beaches ..

It's not an angle view finder though, that goes behind the camera...

Honest candid photograpy isn't 'gotcha' photography..

A GOOD candid photographer brings his/her cameras out into the open and through good people skills and a non threatening attitude makes the subject not care if the camera captures the moment..

Study the work of Diane Arbus, and others. You will notice that often the most effective photos are the ones where the subjects are staring directly into the camera. The powerful imagaes are a direct result of a collaboration between photographer and subject..

Stealing an image from people is unfair, and I think immoral. I know this new wolrd we are in sees no difference between a squirrel and a human being. But I do. You just don't treat people like that..

So to all those who lust after the latest in sneaky cam technology. Enjoy them, but ask yourelf, are your photos as good as Diane Arbus'? And could at leat PART of the reason be technique?.

What's dishonest about it? The "gotcha" of capturing the scene without influincing it seems to be what candid photography is all about. From the dictionary: "relating to or being photography of subjects acting naturally or spontaneously without being posed.".

A GOOD candid photographer brings his/her cameras out into the openand through good people skills and a non threatening attitude makesthe subject not care if the camera captures the moment..

Once you're interjected yourself into the situation, you've changed "the moment." You can never get that back. You can have a subject who tolerates the camera, but they can never forget it. Getting that natural/spontaneous situation back is difficult at best, and impossible in some situations..

Study the work of Diane Arbus, and others. You will notice thatoften the most effective photos are the ones where the subjects arestaring directly into the camera. The powerful imagaes are a directresult of a collaboration between photographer and subject..

I'll agree that they are effective, powerful, and give you a "connection" with the subject. That doesn't change the fact that you don't need to have someone staring into the camera to make a powerful photograph..

It's also not a requirement that the subject and photographer collaborate in any manner whatsoever. How about the picture of the Navy sailor greeting his girl? That is candid photography that did not need collaboration and would have been missed if the photographer needed to introduce themselves and take a few minutes to loosen up the subjects. For more powerful images, check this and tell me if every shot would be effective if they got to know people first: http://digitaljournalist.org/issue0309/lm_intro.html.

I don't see how one can steal an image from a person(other than copyright infringement or theft). Would it still be stealing if the person just didn't notice you? Why does this piece of equipment make it any different from the rest of your gear? How is the person having their picture being treated unfairly? Indeed, how are they being treated in any manner whatsoever if you have no effect on them?'Be right, fearless, faithfull, and true to others...'T.S. Elliott..

I'm not trying to win anything. I'm just trying to understand where you're coming from. I can understand the emotions, but I want to know the reason for your opinion. It is difficult when people use words like stealing, without showing what's being stolen; immoral without telling explaining what moral is being broken..

Certainly this piece of gear can be abused, just as any piece can. Put on a long lens at a beach and I'd bet people will assume you are taking pictures of women, even if you're trying to get pictures of the seals on the rocks offshore. (Use THIS at a beach and I'll assume you're taking pictures of women too.).

I'm confident in myself and my motivation that I would not abuse this piece of equipment. I'm also confident that others are responsible enough to keep their minds out of the gutter.'Be right, fearless, faithfull, and true to others...'T.S. Elliott..
