What do I need to start taking IR photos with my D80?
Where can I learn how to take IR photos with my D80 and do I just need a IR filter? Any good sources of information. Thank you...

I have heard that the D80 has a very good IR filter which is not good if you want to do IR. The best way to test the camera to see if it can be used for IR is to do the remote control test as discussed in this article in Shutterbug.

Hope this helps.

If your camera does not admit much IR to the sensor, your exposures through an IR filter will take longer, basically. You will need to use a tripod, and anything moving will be blurred in your photo. One thing to remember if you go the IR route is to set the White Balance as a custom WB, with the filter in place. Otherwise, your images will probably have some strange coloration..

Actually the TV remote isn't a good indication because it will react to the slightest infrared sensitivity which may not be enough to actually take an infrared picture. The best way to test a camera is to put an infrared filter in front of the lens and shoot a picture in a sunny day. Unlike the consumer cameras with a live preview, shooting with a DSLR will require you to compose the picture before screwing the filter on the lens. Or you can get an oversize filter and hold it in front of the lens..

That article you referenced was a rewrite of our Shutterbug article written in 2002.http://www.bermangraphics.com/press/infrared.htm.

Thanks Charlie,.

This link in the "Beginners" section in particular should help you get started with your D80..

The person I refer to has a D80, and we were using it that day, tho, I try to keep my writings generic, rather than brand specific in this series..

Be sure to look back at the entire "Beginners" series, to get foundation knowledge about IR in general. It will help you understand what you are doing..

Hope this helps..
