Universal Monopod Retractable Feet? (Monopod to Tripod accessory)
I am sure that I read somewhere that one can get feet for a monopod so as to enable the monopod to stand upright without support i.e. the feet turn the monopod into a kind of a tripod..

I have since lost access to that information and I am wonderng if anyone out there has heard, or know of, such a product..

Manfrotto make this sort of thing for some of their monopods. Here are some examples:.

And.

And.

And finally.

So what I want is an accessory offering something similar that will work with all, if not most, monopods..

Thanks in advance...

Not sure if it's truely universal but Bogen has their storable tripod kit that, if the OD/ID of the last tube extension of your monopod is adequate, should work....

Thanks for that link..

I was already aware of that product but unfortunately it doesn't work with my monopod; the last section of my (cheapo) monopod doesn't have screw-on/removable feet so the product you have given a link for wouldn't work for me..

Anyone else have any ideas...

Does it have a rubber boot or is it finished with an end cap that can be removed? If need be, you might be able to use a hack saw and cut the last extension just above the 'foot'. Just ensure it's OD is appropriate for the ID of the Bogen attachment....

As the following indicates, the Bogen is attached by sliding the housing over the tube and tightening the set screw....

No sure-fire off-the shelf product - but a suggestion that I've done myself that you might find very acceptable..

In your case embedding a small standard brass spigot (female) in the last section of your monopod will let you screw on any variety of table-top tripods or other accessories to use as a base. If you already own one - your total cost will be only an hour and a few dollars and will only add a few grams to the monopod weight. The attachment you choose for feet you can keep in your camera pack or vest pocket..

I've already made this modification myself to a couple older 055 Manfrotto tripods to allow one leg to be detached, coupled with either the upper or lower section of the tripod center column and used as a monopod. It's every bit as good as anything I could have bought and is certainly easier to carry for hiking than the full tripod..

My choice for feet (because I already had several) was a Manfrotto table-top mini tripod. The assembled combo looks off-the-shelf and is rigid and stable enough to trust with several lbs on level ground - indoors or out. There are certainly cheaper and lighter options available and your own load limit will depend on your own monopod and whatever you decide to use as a base..

If the bottom section of that monopod gives you the minimum required size and this sounds like it might do the trick, I can post some photos and further details if someone can clue me in on how posting photos works on this forum. The modifications are pretty simple but some care is required in the assembly because perfect allignment IS quite important...

OK - here are some shots of the modifications I did myself..

Don't be distracted simply because I built this one with an orientation that is upside-down relative to your monopod - this is in fact exactly like a light-stand configuration..

That's just my personal preference, and certainly won't stop you from embedding a female spigot instead of a male one in your monopod if that's what works for you..

Cost of this project was $12 for the brass spigots and epoxy steel. All other items were already in house and this just made them more useful..

The tripod normally has spiked feet, but I swap over to a rubber cap when converting to a monopod - easier to remove it later..

Hope this is food for thought...
