I've just bought a D40 with two lenses, and wanted a decent bag to keep it protected..
I can recommend the Lowepro Slingshot series of bags - lots of space, well protected, and well thought out too with pockets for memory cards, screen protector cloth, and a waterproof cover. And it's comfortable to wear and easy to access!.
I'm not sure whether it'll fit in your backpack or not, but I recommend you have a look at them anyway. I got the 200 model from Amazon at a good price, and would recommend looking around a little for a decent price as many highstreet retailers will charge you full price and you don't have to pay that much. If you have a lot of kit, the 300 may be preferable, but the 200 is a good size anyway.Good luck,M..
I just bought this one for my D40 and Macbook. Work out well..

The Lowepro slingshot bags look a little big to fit inside the backpack that I already have. But they still look like a nice option..
The CompuDaypack bags on the contrary seem more like what I would be looking for, with the only disadvantage that it is not possible to separate the laptop-carrying from the camera-carrying capacities, which is ultimately what I would like..
Thank you very much for your suggestions..
I will keep on looking...
I struggled with the same problem. I want to keep my (steadily increasing) gear safe obviously, but I don't only carry camera gear so an out-and-out photography bag is not ideal. And I sometimes have to carry a laptop - not often, but that requirement does limit my options..
Until now I have been using a simple backpack, and putting the camera and lenses in a couple of bags inside the backpack. This is not unlike what you are thinking of - and I don't recommend it. Too many bags, too inconvenient, too slow..
I finally settled on a Tamrac Adventure 9 (5549 in some markets I think). I don't actually know whether to recommend it yet, because it only arrived this morning! But it's well designed and well made - I think it will do the job...
I just bought a dx40 and a bag made by Tamrac. The bag is really only big enough to cary the body with lens, spare memory cards, batteries, and maybe a cell phone or something of that nature..
It has one main padded compartment for the camera, one pocket underneath the lid, a front pocket, and two side pockets. It comes with a shoulder strap, but what I really like about it, is the fact it has belt loops to hold the camera on your belt..
The bag is just big enough to carry the main essentials, but small enough to make it easy to carry. I like it alot...
You should plan on doing what I do. I have a laptop bag and a camera bag. I use the Compudaypack for travel only. There probably isn't going to be a one bag solution.Ron.

I suggest you have a look at:.

I've used this excellent site several times when buying bags and it's really helped..
You can choose your camera model and then there's a subsection whereby you choose which type of bag you're after, shoulder, slingshot, holster, backpack etc. Then normal people, like us, who actually own the bags in question write reviews (complete with pictures) and they get posted..
So you can see loads of pictures of the actual bag/s with the equipment inside etc..

Thanks for that link...very informative and everything you need is there!..
Thanks for the link..
I went there and surfed through the photos and finally found a camera bag that might work for me, the Tamrac Explorer 2 5502..
I will come back and give my full opinion once I get it..
Thank you all for your help...
