It's normally not a good idea to buy lenes that you already have covered unless you have a particular use for it. A 24 f2.8 might be a good idea if you have a need for a 24mm but the aperture of the 18-200 is just not good enough. But, I really think it would be better if you were getting a F2.0 or faster lens. In the old days of film, having the stop of speed was necessary because film past 400 ISO was just so bad. Today a D80 at ISO 1200 is much better than that..

18-200 covers all. Good universal lens..
Prime lenses are specialized, better corrected for particular focal lengh..
They are sharper in detail, faster, costly. If you are looking at semi wide angle wide lens because you need very good detail at Actual Pixels level - 24mm dedicated lens will be much better, then 18-200mm at 24mm..
If you are not perfectionist, 18-200mm will be good enough.http://www.stan-pustylnik.smugmug.com..
Well, is there a reason for buying the fixed lens?.
Is it for giggles?.
Or is there something your zoom lens cannot do that means you need the 24mm?..
Prime lenses (fixed focal lenght) tend to offer.
- more light (wider aperture)- sharper, better image- less weight.
Than a zoom lens, usually at a lower price as well. the disadvantage is of course that you can't zoom. which is sometimes a good thing, makes you think more about your composition but can limit you in ceratain situations....
As sated and also after a while a photographer tends to identify a focal length ( a field of view ) they typically shoot at, and it makes sense to choose a good lens for that range, hence you tend to grab a prime or small range zoom with better optical characteristics than a zoom covering a bigger range than you usually need..

We got a new lens in the lab a couple days ago, along with a new camera to put it on. The lens is the Nikkor 14mm f/2.8 wide angle..

On the digital bodies, this gives you a 21mm lens... rectilinear. As a matter of fact, it has almost no distortion at all. For the price, it should do this, but you never know... (G) If you are a wide angle shooter, this is a fantastic lens! 21mm is much wider than 27mm... and covers a good chunk of the 10-20 Sigma that we also have..
This lens is the best wide angle I have had the chance to use. At almost 3 times the price of the Sigma 10-20... you have to *really* want to shoot wide angle!.
