Download Faststone Image Viewer. This free image edit software has a very good slideshow option. I believe using it means you don't have to edit picture files for a slideshow. The slideshow option also has good options..

You should just be able to open the folder in XP or Vista, and then select 'slideshow' from the 'view' menu, surely? Alternatively, we use Picasa - http://picasa.google.com/ - which is free and seems to do the job...

I'm unaware that XP and Vista have View menus. Explore has a View menu, but no "Slideshow" option. IE has a View menu but no "Slideshow"option..
I also use Faststone for it's slideshow function..

LOL - I had no issue understanding that message:.
'XP' means 'Microsoft Windows XP Professional'.
So opening 'My Computer/DVD/image and then right clicking and selecting 'open with' should bring you right to 'Windows Picture and Fax Viewer' - which is bundled with Windows XP (among many other OS's) and has slide show functionality. My 8 yr old nephew knows that one by heart!!.
On the other hand - software like Nero will permit you to create a customized slide show directly on a DVD and it will then auto play when inserted..
There are lots of ways to do it - but if a simple slide show for viewing is all that's necessary - better to use what's on the computer...

'XP' means 'Microsoft Windows XP Professional'.
I doubt that the meaning of "XP" was an issue for most people. It can also refer to other versions. I have the "Home" version, being poor..

Unfortunately, your 8-year-old nephew is more advanced than I am. I have never used or found the XP WPFV, probably because I immediately install other picture viewers and they undo the default?.
I have tried for about an hour to find the WPFV on my old XP computer. NADA! It absolutely DOES NOT WORK AS YOU DESCRIBE!!!.
I got out my big Vista book ("Windows Vista Inside Out") and searched for "slide show" On p. 650 it describes how Windows Photo Gallery operates. Unfortunately, it also doesn't describe a method that works, which is typical of Microsoft publications. Specifically, it says:.
"...clicking the Play Slide Show button in the Navigation Bar immediately starts a slide show...".
Hmmm...where is that button? What is the Navigation Bar? I looked in the Index...nope, "Navigation Bar" is not in there! I spent 30 minutes Googling to find out that according to Microsoft, the Navigation Bar is the bar on the left side that has the list of pictures, folders, tags, etc. There is no "button" there. Reading further, I discover that:.
"A toolbar across the top of Windows Photo Gallery offers shortcuts to tasks and information, while the familiar left-hand navigation bar provides easy access to organizational elements. You can use the control bar at the bottom of the screen to launch a slide show with a single click, and use the slider to quickly resize your thumbnails for comfortable viewing.".
So, the button is in the "Control Bar" at the bottom. OK. That works. But it seems to overlay a faint picture of the "Control Bar" on top of every picture! That's ugly....
Turns out that F11 also launches the Slide Show. This seems handy, but it also forces the full screen mode, if no gallery is selected..
This has been an interesting quest. I conclude that you are probably right...all versions of Windows come with a dumb picture viewing facility and some of them have slide show modes. However, they are not well documented and are of limited usefulness. They can easily and invisibly be replaced by other viewers and when you want the default MS viewer, it won't be there. None of these picture viewers are simple .exe files!.
Sorry if my terse rejection was wrong. I still think that Faststone Image Viewer (free) is a good solution..

Unless you can't get to it or find it has annoying characteristics. .

Hi Charlie! No offense taken or intended! Some of the youngsters today seem to know so much about computers it's surprising! I have three computers here - one with XP Home Edition and two with XP Pro. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is an integrated part of the Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 operating systems and you are perfectly correct - installing and assigning other viewing software as the default viewing program will make Windows Picture and Fax Viewer hard to find!.
Just to confuse the issue - that tool bar (or navigation bar) is actually movable and can be assigned to the side of the screen as well as the bottom, and also has an auto-hide option. Anything to confuse the issue!.
I agree with you about many Microsoft publications. Personally I miss my typewriter!! And if Faststone Image Viewer is a good solution for you - then that's definately the one you should use!!.
How do you like that R1? I've had mine for only a week and took a few good shots, but I think I'm feeling about it like you were about Windows Picture and Fax Viewer!! Just discovered the 'no focusing beam in manual focusing mode' irritant!! I'm hoping a high intensity LED flashlight will solve that issue in low light conditions. Any suggestions yourself?.

My experience is that installing viewing software will silently/invisibly change the default. When I get a new computer, I rarely try to use it before I load it up with my selection of programs, thus I never see all the defaults that MS "gives" us..

I wish MS would standardize the names for these "bars". Yes, some applications can move them around and hide them..

I use Faststone for 2 things: 1) for slideshows and 2) to quickly view new pix. Since it easily shows you a full screen view, it's a good tool for easily sorting through pix...and since Faststone loads quickly, it doesn't waste time..
How do you like that R1? I've had mine for only a week and took a fewgood shots, but I think I'm feeling about it like you were aboutWindows Picture and Fax Viewer!!.
It's not perfect. It has a few warts (I think it was rushed to market as the impact of the A100 became obvious). But it takes amazing pix. It's unmatched for discrete shots of people..
The short shutter lag (7 mS) makes the R1 excellent for moving car pix...IF you prefocus (either half-press and hold or switch to MF and use the center button to focus once)..
Just discovered the 'no focusingbeam in manual focusing mode' irritant!! I'm hoping a high intensityLED flashlight will solve that issue in low light conditions. Anysuggestions yourself?.
I rarely try to manually focus. When I do, it's in studio light conditions. Most of the time, I let the camera focus automatically. It's better and faster than I am for "normal" subjects. Only when I have something confusing do I attempt MF..
I made a laser AF assist thingie for the R1. It detects the AF assist LED and turns on a laser + hologram to project a pattern on the subject. Unfortunately, when I use the F32X flash, the R1 kills the in-camera LED, as the flash has 4 LEDs. I need to devise a way to turn on the laser when ANY AF assist LED turns on. Hmmm....

Charlie you're a genius!! Id love to try that out but don't have a lathe available..
So how does it work? And when do you start making them available?.

Shux! [blushing].

It works OK. What did you expect me to say?Unfortunately, it's a bit expensive to build [hand crafted]..
A better design for "mass production" would mount the laser module on the flash shoe, with an extension shoe on top. Since there is a signal from the camera to the flash that turns on the AF LEDs, that same signal could be used to actuate the laser...and it could intercept the signal going to the flash, so that the LEDs don't turn on when the laser is being used [flooding the scene with light reduces the contrast of the hologram pattern]..
The problem is that there are only a few R1 owners [have you heard the rumor that Sony only sold 12 in the US and fewer than that in the EU? And that it took 2 years to purge the last one?]. If this design could be used on many different camera/flash combos, then it might be worth trying...but every manufacturer "invents" a new flash shoe interface. Grrr....
Then, Sony seems to have used the LANC protocol to communicate with the F32X flash, so I'd have to figure out their messages...and include a little LANC uP chip in the laser adapter. On second thought, if I intercept the string and pass on only what I want, that will take time. The R1 + F32X combo is ALREADY very slow to respond, due to using the LANC protocol during exposure sensing and setting. That would NOT be a good thing to do..
Bottom Line: Too much work and risk...too little potential benefit..
Now if I could get Sony to cooperate when they release the R2... .

Probably just a rumor - when I bought mine on eBay a couple weeks ago there were about 10 that went up for sale and 6 were 'reconditioned' items being sold by the same outfitter..
