Hi,.
I'm still trying to get the best out of my S3 IS,recently took somepictures in the dark(though there were steet lights present)..andthey looked pretty grainy..i was using ISO200 and a aperture of3.2...what would be the ideal setting in the dark? Thanks in advance!.
NO WAY can you get an S3 to shoot a good image at ISO 200 in 'the dark.' Almost all these nighttime bridge & tunnel shots in my flickr set are from my S3 IS... Click on 'more properties' on the r side of the image page to see my exposure settings..
Oh yeah... you'll need a tripod. And shoot using the timer set to whatever.... I use 2 sec delay..
Only the 'mirrored' tunnel image (whichwaydidhego?) and the original image (gutterball) are kinda-handheld. I used a tabletop tripod and held against the side wall of the tunnel for a long exposure. Not really handheld... but assisted by a small tripod..

Use the lowest ISO possible. You will probably need a tripod if you do that though, as the proper exposure may take a few seconds...
What does a shutter speed of "-54/32" mean? I've never heard of such a shutter speed..
And what does a lens aperture of "107/32 mean? This is all new stuff to me. I've seen shutter speeds of 1/30 and 1/1000 and apertures of F2 and F5.6 and F8 but never 107/32..
??!!..
Yeah, i've seen this stuff in my exif on flickr.... I can't really tell you why....
The Canon S3 IS has a lens from 6-72mm which is an equiv of 36-432mm on a 35mm format. It goes from f/2.7 on the wide to f/3.5 on the long. Max aperture is only f/8..
So, I'm guessing, that somehow the aperture can't go smaller because the actual 'opening' is getting so incrementally SMALL that it just can't adjust any more..
What am I trying to say? I dunno. focal lengths can be multiplied by 6 to get 35mm equiv. The aperture and shutter things I haven't a clue..
Of course, the exposure info is at the TOP of the screen, so that's really all you need, eh?.

David, I would have been more than happy if I could've taken pics which were half as good as the one's taken by you of that bridge!! Yes, I guess not using a tripod did contribute to the blurness, but I was surprised how grainy they turned out at just ISO200..may I know the exact settings that you used ON the camera? Thanks again!..

First off, thank you for the kind words. Second, I was trying to squeeze everything I could out of my S3 before stepping up to a dSLR and dropping over $3000 on gear. I've had the great fortune of shooting w/ many great & accomplished photographers, so I found ways to eek out that little more by experience..
Why not visit the images and view 'more properties' as I'd suggested? All the EXIF is there. Are you asking me to do the work, respond, post samples, and further give you this info so you don't need to bother w/ any effort at all? Puzzles me a bit. Perhaps you are asking for more info than is given, I'll assume that is what you mean, since your request seems soecific (but somewhat vague)....

Looks like the S3 counts in 32nds. So that would mean the shutter speed was 54 of those, making the exposure length 1.6875 seconds. Way too long to even think of hand-holding the shot, IS or no..

Again, the camera counts differently than we do, but it means the same thing. The aperture should be f/3.34375. Not that familiar with the S3, isn't the lens something like an f/2.8-3.5 or so? Basically, the lens is wide open at a certain zoom ..
??!!.
Unless of course I am completely mistaken. That doesn't happen very often, but it has been known to happen anyway. (G).
