Rebel XTi
OK, I did make up my mind to buy the XTi. The remaining questions are:.

1. Shall I buy the kit with the 28 - 55 mm lens?.

2. Or shall I buy the body only with a Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Zoom DG Macro Autofocus Lens (just found this one at US1 Camera as a kit for 989 USD)? I still have the lens for my old rebel, which is a 28-90 mm and it is in pretty good shape - hardly used..

One more question: If you would buy a zoom lense, which brand would you get? Sigma or Canon?.

Any opinions? Many thanksBeatrice..

The kit lens is a good place to start for most people. It's so cheap you can play with it while deciding which lens to get next. Drooling over the next lens is part of the fun. But if you decide you don't want the kit lens, Sigma and Tamron make lenses with a similar range that are better quality..

Remember that on an XTi you have to get a lens that starts at 17 or 18mm if you want wide angle. 17mm is like a 27mm lens on a 35mm film camera. So the lens you mention may not be wide enough for you. Multiply by 1.6 to get the 35mm equivalent..

1st, the 28-90 will become a 44-144 on the XTi..

If you can, get the 17-85 EF Canon. It is a beter optical design, and offers a beter build too...More durible and shaper at larger F/stops (smaller #'s).

The LONG Zoom type (28-200) don't offer the best sullition. typicly long zooms compromise on sharpness to offer a wider zoom range. try to stay within a 5x or less zoom range for a beter design. and sharper results..

As 3rd party lens's go. I perfer Tamron/Promaster over Sigma for overall build and optical quality.'Well, Good Luck With That' (SpongeBob SquarePants).

Great! Thanks for your fast answers. It definitely helps. I will probably go with the 28/55mm kit for now.Beatrice..

18/55 kit, and for the price it is a very good lens.

Isn't the kit lens an 18-55mm? I heard it's a great lens for the price..

Read my post on the 70-300mm which is supposed to be better than the 28-300, in short I would not recommend. If you want a good cheap lens try the 28-105 from Canon, if you have more money the 28-135 IS. The kit lens is good for a while anyway and doesn't cost you much..

After my recent experience with Sigma, I'd have to say go with Canon. Tamron is good too btw..

Any opinions? Many thanksBeatrice..
