Rebel XT vs. XTi dilemma
Hey everyone!.

I am new to these forums, but have been reading some topics for a little while now. I want to get my first DSLR camera but like many people I have a budget, and lack technical expertise to make a judgement call on what kind of camera / lens I should get! Now, keep in mind that I am just starting out so by no means am I a professional or even close to it..

I have narrowed it down to the Canon Rebel XT or the XTi. Ive heard so many good things about the Canon and the Rebel. Also, my budget is approximately US$700 to $750 which includes body and the lens..

Now down to the actual question. Which camera should I get considering my budget? The XT has 8MP while the XTi has 10.2MP. Does the extra 2 MP make much of a difference if I am not going to be making pictures larger than 8"x10"? Or would it be better for me to get the XT and get a better lens? What kind of lens would you guys reccommend?.

The primary purpose for my camera and lens will be to take professional looking modeling type pictures of my girlfriend who absolutely loves being in front of the camera, and I love taking pictures of her. As well as taking pictures of my surroundings and scenery..

I am leaning towards the XT body because it is cheaper, but I am completely lost on the lens that I should get! I would prefer the XT over the XTi if it wouldnt make much of a difference in the quality. And I would really like to stay in my budget!.

I appreciate all the help!.

I also want to get a wireless remote for either of these cameras to take pictures. Any suggestions?..

The extra megapixels does not really matter..

What does matter, and is worth the difference unless your budget is really tight, is the bigger back screen on the XTi..

You'll never notice any difference in 11x14 inch pictures between the two camera, technically, but the bigger screen on the back will be great for jusding how well you are doing as you shoot..

The XTi is far more camera than the XT. Focus accuracy and consistency along with exposure accuracy is much improved. I've had both and the XT I used last summer was pretty disappointing in those two respects in comparison to my Pentax DSLR's. The XTi I'm using now is quite the opposite. Further, the new menu system and photo style parameters, just like it's more expensive brothers the 30D and 5D is a vast improvement over the XT..

I really don't consider the two cameras in the same category.Dave Lewis..

I would buy the Rebel XT and use it to learn digital photography with a DSLR. Buying a XTi is a gamble. While most are good, a percentage of them have underexposure problems. The XTi I purchased made me wish I had not give my XT to my daughter. My XTi is one that underexposes. When I had the XT I never had focusing issues.

Canon usually replaces Rebels every 18 months.thezero..

The extra MP not particularly relevant. Excessive detail can actually be a bad thing to be post-processed way in modeling shots....

Lens type you'll want something that offers shallow DOF something better than a max aperture of f/4-5.6. 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8 for further away, 24-70 mm f/2.8 would explode your budget..

Don't forget the lighting. You may not want to go for multiple flashes, but lighting can have a big impact in a portrait...
