Program for storing photos
Hello guys, I dont know how silly this question is.However I want to ask in order not to mess my photos on the pc with my new cam..

Basically is there a program that is similar for example to i-tunes, but is dedicated to photos not songs?.

I.e. to put attributes to the photos, thus the name wouldnt be of so importance. Basically I want to have in each picture which people are inside, in order in the future if I want the pictures of for example Tom, to find them easy..

Hopefully I have not embarassed my self with this question! .

Hello Haris,.

You may want to have a look at this free program (link below); it's very easy to use and set up to do just what you are looking for. I am sure this is not the only one out there, but my parents use this and they have not had any issues with it..

I would recommend Picasa from Google as well. Apart from being free, it is good at indexing lots of pictures and provides all the basic tools you need to adjust pictures such as crop, exposure and has special effects such as B&W and Sepia..

I use picasa for all my album storage and photo transfer. It will hunt down all the pics on your computer and organize them. Plus, if you are new at pp, it has some really easy to use base pp tools.LGhttp://www.bytephoto.com/...wgallery.php?cat=998&stype=2&si=lettingg0..

There are MANY programs you can use. I have tried Picassa. I recommend it to people, but I didn't like the way it organized pix. I have tried 4-5 different solutions and have decided that Lightroom is the one for me. It's just superb as a photo database!.

Go here and see if it works for you:.

Picasa also makes it easy to set up on-line photo albums..

Many look, but few see...

I'm another enthusiastic Picasa user, but it's not the whole story..

I need to offline photos, so I also use Thumbs Plus which allows you to keep thumbnails of offline CDs, it also prepares thumbs and web pages, which I use as CD catalogue in case anything happens to Thumbs Plus. The cataloguing in Thumbs Plus is much better than Picasa, but it does cost money..

I think of Tom Hanks in Turner and Hooch pulling off a piece of floss for each tooth and realize that there are probably people who have fastidiously over the years added keywords and comments to all of the thousands of photos they have downloaded..

A photo storage system that depends on comments and keywords to find photos requires comments and keywords. I messed with that a few years back and realized it wouldnt work for me. The file system itself has to be set up so I can quickly get to a photo..

For people who consider My Computer their Windows file system programs like Picasa and EasyShare are probably better than no organization at all. But I think you can be program independent and find photos more easily..

Someone posted a system a couple of years ago that induced me to change mine. Ive always made a separate folder for each download with the date and keywords in the folder name. But within camera folders the image folders werent in chronological order. The post suggested a year/mo/date format that keeps them all in order. Today would be 070807 followed by something like Zoe Birthday & Boat Parade for the folder name. I can usually go right to a photo I took 4 years ago..

Irfanview works best for me to find a photo. You can quickly change the thumbnail size, which helps. The thumbnail page has a slim navigator on the side that allows maximum thumbs to be displayed while still having full search capability. With the larger thumbs you can select among several similar photos to send one directly to Photoshop..

Irfanview is also good for adding comments and keywords. Make the thumbs large enough to make decisions and hold the Ctrl key while you select all the photos with Bob and Alice. Then add either comments or keywords. Irfanview also has a versatile and competent search. I suppose any organizer that lets you choose whatever thumbnail size you prefer would do all that, but Irfanview devotes more space to the thumbs while still giving you navigation capability than anything Ive seen..

At one time I had Irfanview make a large thumbnail HTML file of everything I removed to CD. I broke down and bought a 500 Gig external HD and copied all the CDs to it. I still make DVDs for backup, but it is nice having everything available on the computer...

I have found Picasa a complete PITA, as it doesn't let you organise things exactly as you desire..

My vote goes to FastStone Image Viewer (and the other free, FastStone products)...

The thing in common with all those people who slag off Picasa is that they haven't tried it - or tried it properly..

Here are a few of the options that Picasa has to organise files for those that want to classify individual pictures..

1 - Captions. The caption field is a free form text field. Anything in it can be searched in the text search box - so tags if you want them.

2 - Albums - Create your albums, a photo can be put in as many albums as you want, probably more versatile than tags as you can sort inside albums, add description to the album (two fields) etc etc.

3 - Keywords. Slightly hidden (View Keywords, Ctrl-K) but there all the same.

4 - Slider date filter.

5 - any number of ways of sorting the folder/album listing.

6 - "Show Duplicate" tool.

Still doesn't do my offline oranisation, though..
