What's your review of the Canon PowerShot Pro 90?

Comments (11)

I own a PowerShot Pro 70 and am delighted with it, considering moving to the new Pro 90. (In the past I have done some fairly serious photography, such as publicity photos for small theatre and dance groups) I wonder about the following: - The viewfinder is no longer direct optical, but always uses an LCD. With the 70, I avoid using the LCD, in order to conserve battery power, so I can take pictures all day. Does the small LCD use a lot less power than the big one? Does the new battery have more capacity? Am I going to have to buy another battery? - The 10X zoom is nice, but I wish it went wider than 37mm (35mm equivalent). The Pro 70 goes down to 28mm. There is an add-on lens available, but still...

The reviewers keep saying that you would use an external flash because it is more powerful, but I use it with the 70 because I can bounce it. Head-on flash provides extremely ugly lighting. - Is there a good writeup anywhere about the various ISO speeds available? What is the downside of using ISO 400? - Does the B&W mode provide anything that could not be obtained in the computer by converting to grayscale? I had actually considered buying the EOS D30 but this seems to provide much of the functionality of that camera, without the need to carry an assortment of lenses everywhere. Or perhaps I'm missing something. - Michael Bate.

I purchased a Pro90 IS about a month ago and I am still learning it's special features. I love the camera and the software with one exception. The problem I am having is with the "Movie Mode" software. I apparently don't have it. The "Software Starter guide", which came with the camera, states per Page 29 step 1 "Confirm that ArcSoft Photo Impression has been installed". This software was not provided on either of the two disks that came with the camera.

Same problem, ArcSoft not included, this camera replaces a Sony 505V which was stolen. The lens, IS, and 370MM are quite impressive, but the slow exposure and delay in shutter operation make action shots very difficult, a disappointment but not overshadowing the wonderful lens system. The electronic viewfinder takes some getting used to, but is quite accurate; the rear articulated view finder is terrific. I use an external Canon flash all the time, greatly expands flash capability! I use a 340mb Microdrive, great almost endless storage. Should have gotten .5 gb drive for marginally more! Battery life very impressive. Hopefully they will software update to give same functions as G1 someday (include the fixed focus option that was omitted from 90).

I am thinking of purchasing a digital camera, my problem is, there are 2 that I have been reading up on. One is the CANON POWER SHOT PRO 90 S.... the other is the OLYMPUS C2100 Z..

Could someone tell me which is the better of the 2, and also, tell me what you think of the CANON POWER SHOT PRO 90 S. Thanks..

C. Clarke, I'm also am about to buy a digital camera. the most impressive difference that the 90IS has is a swivel LCD. that's important if you want to take unusually positioned pictures. the online brochures can tell you more details, but rarely do camera descriptions include whether the LCD is swivel or not - you have to go see the camera in person.

I have just order my Canon PowerShot Pro90 IS but I found out that you can not use filters on the Wide-Angle & Close-Up lens as I have Lee filers System that uses 100x100 & 100x150 filter does any one knows is there a way that you can use these filter on the above lens. Also someone posted message about Metz 40 MZ-2 and above about using this flashgun on this camera well I have this Flashgun and I wrote to Metz(UK) and they reply as SCA adapter you need to use:SCA3101 or SCA3102 should make it work OK. But I have just the Metz 54 MZ-3 and is more suiltable for the above camera but you can not use the following items for this flashgun & Camera:G16, SCA3000A, SCA3007A and SCA3080 will not fit but you can use it for the Metz 40 MZ-2, they are bring out the following items for the Metz 54 MZ-3 In the next few months the SCA3007 will be replaced with a new SCA3008 for off camera use with the 54MZ3 and the SCA3080 with a new SCA3082 for cordless TTL..

I just bought the pro 90IS but haven't had the time to practise. I have a kodak DC290 and is vastly different. Any site where one can get tips on best usages? Fredy Ross.

I am debating replacing my Olympus C2500L with a Pro90 or spending less money now and getting the Olympus FL40 flash to help with indoor work. I would really like to wait for a stronger version of the Pro90 ( 4 or 5 megapixel CCD with same lens working at 30-300 or 24-240 ), but might need to act sooner because weight of FL40 flash may cause C2500L body to flex or even slightly crack if user not careful when the flash is mounted directly on the camera hotshoe? Since that is unacceptable, has anyone had this problem when using 420EX or 550EX directly on the Pro90?.

I am about to buy a new digital camera. At this moment I have two old cameras: an Epson PhotoPC and a Sony FD7 MavicaI havent been able to make a decision between: Canon Powershot Pro90IS and Nikon CoolPix 995. They look very similar to me. Does anyone have some information "vital" to help me in my decision ? .

Thanks a lot in advance.

Definitely get this cam(The Pro 90IS)!! I too am a serious photographer finally dabbling in digital photos in 1997 with a DC 120 digicam. I have been working with a Nikon Coolpix 900s for almost the last 3 years and this cam is a god-send. The Image stabilizer and zoom make taking pics in any conditions a delight and getting very satisfactory results. As far as the ISO ratings I dont go above 100 (50 is what gives me the best results actually)) with this cam because the higher you go the more evident the noise (but still very good results). Get the cam you won't regret it especially if you liked the Pro 70 this cam is simply put, feature and quality wise,... AWESOME!!!.

I included a sample taken of a moving race car that I took in fading light from at least 750 feet away at the top of a 26 row grandstand and for me to get even close to a sharp looking pic at this range while zoomed is miraculous, but this cam does it handily!!! Attachments:.
