Point & Shoot suggestions...
I have no camera experience and am looking to buy a point and shoot camera to take on holiday..

I quite like the idea of the Panasonic TZ3 which seems to get good reviews but am thinking I may prefer something a little more compact..

Could someone please provide an alternative to the TZ3 that would be a bit more pocket size?.

I quite like the idea of a large zoom and wide lense but as I no next to nothing I'm not sure weather these things (or any others) would help me take better pictures....

Thanks...

Well... a wider zoom range will allow you to take a broader range of subjects but the long end still isn't going to be tight enough for 'wild' wildlife. Image stabilisation isn't always enough either..

For holiday use I think you'd be so much better served with a little Canon SD800is/ IXus 850 (the one with the 28-110 lens) as you'll be far more likely to want to shoot landscapes and fit city architecture into the the frame. Usually you can walk nearer, but stepping further back is not so easy.Take a look here at what I made a little Canon s400 do a couple of years back:http://www.pbase.com/johnfr/australia__the_red_centreJohn.Please visit me at:http://www.pbase.com/johnfr/backtothebridge..

Not sure why your comments then rule out the TZ3 which starts at 28mm and has less distortion at the wide angle than the Canon. Then the TZ3 has the longer zoom to go with the wide angle..

The TZ3 is a great travel camera precisely because you get both wide angle and good zoom. It is not very big and can fit in a pocket depending on what you wear.terryhttp://tbanet.zenfolio.com/..

Thanks for the replies..

Nice shots on the cannon..

So are there many alternatives to the TZ3 in terms of being small, having wide angle and large zoom..

The only one I have come accross is the Ricoh R6?.

Im just wondering what others there are in this area to consider..

There actually aren't a lot the three cameras that get compared a lot are the Canon, Ricoh and Panasonic. Each person is going to like what they use best or they would not have bought it. The TZ3 is a lot of fun to use. Most of the shots in my galleries from London, Twilight in NY Central Park and DPReview group are from the TZ3. If you look at them you will be able to see the camera used in the info.terryhttp://tbanet.zenfolio.com/..

Well... that would be because the little Canon also has a viewfinder which is incredibly useful for two reasons:.

1) You can use it when ambient light swamps the LCD or, if in the near dark the LCD is too bright to see..

2) By using a viewfinder the user will be forced to hold the camera more steadily..

Don't worry, it's simply something that extends the situations in which a camera can be used without a lot of hassle. I'm sure one of those ultra-thin superzooms is a whole lot of fun most of the time..
