Go the f40fd... they have dual slots for xD and SD cards and should be small enough to fit in your handbag..
I doubt any compact camera out there actually uses CF card. It's simply too big...

Some of the older Canon A series do.......my A75 uses CF cards and AA batteries which was the reason I nitially chose it to complement my *istD. Still, not really as comact as I wanted but ti would fit in a shirt pocket......just barely! .

I've not noticed a write time problem with the XD card in my F20. The F20 is fast between shots, & at $89 refurbished from newegg, a real bargain..
I was initially worried about having to have 3 kinds of cards, SD for my Panny, CF for the old Canon, XD for the Fuji; but it has turned out to be an operational non-problem..
Dave..
Haven't used an XD card-based camera so I'll take your word on the write times. Go ahead and concentrate on an SD-based point and shoot. Believe me, you won't really want to cross-format your point and shoot and DSLR. Maybe back in the days when it cost more than $100 to buy a 256M card, that was an issue/factor but with the price of memory these days it's just not that big a deal..
'Nice pen, bet you write good stories with it.'..
