Photography Basics - Where to find a good manual.
I have a friend, new to photography, who has just purchased himself a Canon 400D (a good P&S would probably have been better !) and needs to gain an understanding of a whole host of concepts that photographers, worldwide, have to understand..

I have been messing about with cameras for the past fifty years and grew up through the era of having to know what exposure, f-stops, shutter-speeds, depth-of-field and many more of the basics were. I consider myself fortunate..

Before I launch into a fifty-page essay, in an attempt to give some guidance, does anyone out there know of a good source of basic info, a website perhaps, that could assist this young man ? .

With thanks.

Dave..

Canpon's own websites have some excellent informtion on using the cameras techniocal stuff and picking subjects, framing, etc., too..

You might send him to a book store to check out books by Tom Ang be careful to get a photography book, not a computer use book or a John Hedgecoe book. Hedgecoe's latest book combine tools, technioques, artisty, etc..

If he is a good enough friend to keep in your company, why not arrange to go out on a few photo-shoots together? He will learn much from your guidance if you observe his technique and show him where you might do a shot differently. Similarly, why and where you may have switched from AP to TV or reasons why you may have raised the ISO etc etc. With your obvious years of experience, this would be much better (in my opinion) than any how to book.filibuster (Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, UK)http://www.pbase.com/filibuster..

I've owned this - http://www.amazon.com/...chael-Langfords-35mm-Handbook-Langford/dp/067974634X - book forever, and probably purchased it when it was first published. Yes, it's overall based on 35mm film photography, but is an excellent all-arounder for photography fundamentals..

Even now, using a digital SLR, I still refer to this book on occasion...

(I don't know how many times I have recommended these websites ... maybe I should ask for commission ... ).

But seriously, on either site, you will find a wealth of information, including tutorials and other learning tools....
