panasonic or fuji
Hi,.

I am in the market for a new camera. I currently use and love my Fuji f10 but would like to have a bigger zoom range of 10 to 18x. I also have a canon G3 which I used prior to the F10 so like the manual options..

I definetely do not want to venture into a SLR at the moment. Smaller size would also be an advantage as I like to toss in a purse or knapsack..

I mostly take pictures of family and friends both indoors and out and vacation pictures. I have narrowed down to the fz8, fz18 or fuji s8000fd. Any thoughts?.

Thank you,..

First; I'm not just a Fujifilm fanboy. I fact, I used to shoot with the old Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ3..

But after the arrival of the FZ5, something happened. Noise. Lots of it. I know that the reviews here, takes noise into account - and even then, gives the Panasonic ultrazooms nice ratings. But the noise is evident even at ISO 100, which simply isn't acceptable in my opinion..

The Leica lens is good - actually superb. The best to be found in an ultrazoom..

But the Matsushita sensor is way behind competition..

With FujiFilm, it's almost the opposite way around. The Fujinon lens isn't that good, but the SuperHR CCD performs better than any other CCD in these sizes..

As the S8000 is pretty newly announced, I don't know what kind of fish it is. But the S9600/S9100 is extremely nice - build quality is superb, ISO performance is the best you'll get with ultrazoom and zoom range is really nice, as it offers 28mm wide angle..

I recommend waiting until you can see some real high ISO test shots for comparison.(Don't forget to look at the Fuji S6000/6500 too.)..

The trouble with the S6000 is that it is not stabilized... At full zoom, it is a bit of concern, isn't it ?

Well, we've been shooting with zoom like that for decades without IS, so the definitive answer isit depends..

However, the F6000fd is similar in size to a Nikon D40..

Fuji's new superzoom does NOT use the SuperCCD sensor. That will place it in the same category as a any other superzoom. And no one will know exactly where it stands until samples come out...
