Oly E510 or Pentax K100D?? - help
I need good input on these. I had an Oly E-500 but I'm trading it back for an Oly E510 or maybe the Pentax K100D. They both have IS - a big plus for me. The Oly has 10 MP, nice but not essential. The Pentax has 9 point focus, but less pixels - 6 MP I think. anyone have these? does fewer pixels in the Pentax really make a difference if I'm not printing murals?.

Sorry, I forgot to ask - is there much reason to consider the difference between the 3/4 of the Oly, or the 2/3 of the Pentax?..

If you don't mention why you're getting rid of that Oly you're making it difficult to give good advice..

All three cameras are good.Don't wait for the Nikon D-whatever, have fun now!http://www.flickr.com/photos/j_wijnands/..

Hi.

Aimed at slightly different markets. The K100d is more a comparison to the E410..

Having said that the Pentax is a very good camera. If you shoot low light/high iso I would suggest the Pentax..

For other things the results would be much the same but the Oly has more features to make things easier to get plus more mp if you need to crop..

For the price of the Oly though you can get a K100d and a very nice lensgo have a play with them both..

Pentax and Oly are very limited in the affordable quality lens dept. Dust is overrated and IS is better in the glass. The low priced D40x with a kit WA and 50-200VR is probably the best you can do for the money. The default image quality is superior. Oly is a bit retarded IMHO as their default settings are terrible. All the bells and whistles cant hide excessive noise, limited lens selections etc.

While I disagree with most of your post. As for stabilisation I have yet to see ANY proof that it is better in glass...the only proven facts in the in camera/in lense debate are that it is much cheaper in camera and that both systems work..

I also disagree. I bought the Pentax K110D which is the same camera as the Pentax K100D only it doesn't have the Image Stabalizer....just didn't see the need for it. I've been a film photographer for years going back to my college days and taking photography classes where we learned to do everything from loading bulk film to deveoping our own negatives, prints, etc..

Over the course of those years I've had everything from a Minolta X-700 manual 35mm to a Nikon F4 and just recently made the switch to a Digital SLR...the Pentax K110D. The K110D is exactly the same camera as the K100D without IS...no film based camera I ever had had image stabilization so I reasoned it was not necessary and I was right..hard to miss something you've never had. When I decided it was time to finally jump in ad get a DSLR I gradually sold off my Nikon F4 and a few ok not great lenses I had as I didn't want myself tied to one specific brand just because I had the lenses from a particular manufacturer. I looked around and found the Pentax K100D and K110D meet my needs and just felt right in the hand to me. I don't print anything larger than 8X10 so 6 Megapixel was more than sufficient, I rarely crop much as well. I had concsidered the Nikon D50 being I was an already established Nikon film camera user but when they discontinued the D50 and replaced it with the D40 and D40x (10megapixel) I just for some reason wasn't as impressed with them as the Pentax K100D/K110D.

While I had time to return the Pentax K110D I borrowed my stepfather's Nikon D50 and shot the two cameras comparing the two. I preferred the Pentax K110D and decided to keep it as I was perfectly happy and didn't see any reason to return it for another brand's model..

Quality Lenses are out there for the Pentax, and often at less than the cost of a Canon or Nikon manufactured lens. Sigma and Tamron make many of the same lenses in a Pentax AF K mount so there are great 3rd party lenses avail at a decent price. And Pantex makes some of the best AF Prime lenses ever made in their limited series at a price that while a little more than many amauters would spend they are a great value compaired to Canon and Nikon. Plus many great second hand lenses are avail on Ebay for a fraction of their original cost. Every K mount lens ever made is compatable with the K100D/K110D camera with full metering even the manual focus lenses which make the Pentax the most verstile camera on the market..

I also learned that the Pentax K100D/K110D are great for Inferred Photograpghy with a Hoya 72R IR filter without modification. Pentax has a great camera series that is everymuch the equal of Canon and Nikon's offerings. I've been extremely happy with my Pentax K110D..

Thanks everyone for your help. Now, don't hate me. I just went out and bought the Canon Rebel XTi. After going to the store and actually handling them, I decided I liked it best..

Excessive noise? I really recommend downloading RAW samples from the D80/D40x and comparing them alongside the Oly versions. I'd say the Oly was cleaner. The difference is in the in-camera processing..

And btw, isn't the D40x limited to something like 22 digital lenses? That's even less than four thirds!.

Who needs High ISO when you can have Pure Whey?.
