Nikon P5000 vs. Canon Powershot G7
I need your help upgrading!l I have read reviews and comments to the point that I think I have narrowed my choice to two cameras but small details get in the way..

First off let me state that I am aware that both of these cameras are being replaced. However, I want a higher megapixel than my Nikon Coolpix 995 delivers for a trip to Australia this month and wont be able to wait for the new models to come out. There is a lot to like about both of these cameras and I have looked over the side by side comparisome of the two on this site and found it helpful..

I have to agree with the review that the slow shutter on the Nikon is disconcerting but also are the little details on the Canon like no battery indicator or no indication of how many "shots you have left" on your card. Is there a way around this?.

Both cameras probably have more features than I need but even if used infrequently I like to have them. I want decent "movie" capabilities and like the time-lapse photography and monochromatic features on the Canon. Can someone tell me are these last two on the G7 as well as the G9 or just on the newer model?.

I am looking for any insights other than the above few points that will help me make a decision regarding these cameras. I want something that is compact but large enough to be easy to handle. Has over 8 MP and is versitile in shooting modes and features..

Thank you in advance for all help here!..

I wouldn't get either of these. Neither got rave reviews. See if you can find a decent Sony DSC V-3. Do a search for that camera here and see the good words said about it. It does everything and more than those two and the IQ is excellent..

Thanks, Steve! However this is a 3-4 year old camera. I am hesitant to upgrade my CoolPix 995 which was purchaed 5 years ago with something nearly as old. Will it be good for poster size images? And it does not appear to have some of the features I'm interested in...time lapse movies, monochromatic images isolating a single color, etc...

Yikes... monochromatic images...? isolating a single color...?? time lapse movies...??? I know my mom drives a cadillac... LOL....

Seriously though, high resolution movies, three version of continuous shooting, night framing using a laserbeam grid, nightshot with infra-red, Raw mode, hot shoeGood luck with your search!.

I like the Powershot G7 better overall and I think it is a better choice..

It has better IQ and better ISO performance..

I have handled the G7 in my hands and I have to say it is a good piece of camera. I was interested in the image quality which showed to be very good indeed, also the histogram and grid, and customisable screen and so on, but the thing I liked the best (unlike a-series) the rotary button to go in menus, simply fast and great. Solid like an SLR.I don't know about the other features tho, like movies and so on.I recommend the G7...

Thanks again Steve!! I'll look for another review (the one I read was not near so enticing) and the camera.....

It sounds like a fun camera.... Any idea what it should sell for these days if I can find one?..

I think you could pickup a mint one on ebay in the 350-400 dollar range but that's just a guesstimate. They originally went for 700.00. Another reason I recommend it is because it's built very solid and looks similar to the G7. Considered a prosumer camera..

Aside from the review on this site, here's another...http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/V3/V3A.HTM.

Thanks usapatriot. Appreciate the recommendation. Any ideas on how to compensate for no battery life indicator or no way to tell how many shots you have left on your card?..

Thanks Dejan!! Same question as to usapatriot. I found the battery life indicator and shot indicator on my CoolPix 995 very useful. Neither appear to be on the G7. I have no idea how to compensate for them, especially on a 3 week long trip away from computers, and not around outlets to recharge during the day. etc. One extra battery is about all I want to do.

The customizable screen is a nice feature but I can live without it I think. I am down to the very basic details in choosing at this point..

Thanks for the recommendation!!..
