Both are good cameras. D40x has AF assist lamp, spot-meter, ISO3200 as it's USP, so a bit better for portraits/indoors. 400D has shake-reduction,bit lower noise, good for outdoors..

I would be using this camera mostly for taking nature, beautifulscenery photos (as I love traveling/trekking)..
400D as above..
1. Since Nikon uses SD Card and Canon uses CF Card I'm not surewhich one would give better performance..
Not much difference in performance, but CF cards are more rugged (not getting bent easily while in pocket)..
2. Since Nikon supports ONLY AF-S / AF-I lens, I'm not sure howmuch it would cost me latter on to procure any lens in comparisonto that of Canon's EF lens..
Will cost a bit more as EF-S line is not as mature as that of Canon's.Regards, Ajayhttp://picasaweb.google.com/ajay0612..
Check out the cameras in a store and try to use the buttons and dials/controls on the Nikon. I do tutoring for photography and had a client with a new D80 and I didn't like it because you have to push a tiny button and turn a dial at the same time for exposure compensation and to change ISO and other settings, which I found hard to dol, much less with my eye to the viewfinder, and the LCD at the top is small so the icons are so tiny you almost need a magnifying glass to see them. I have a 20D not a Rebel 400 but have seen one that a friend just got and it seemed easier to use. I don't know if the D40X has an LCD at the top, but the Rebel uses the rear screen and the numbers are very large and easy to see. And Canon has a larger range of lenses..

Not enough difference to matter. I prefer SD cards since almost anything runs these nowadays (even my dvd player has a slot for 'm).

Check prices with an online reseller. See what a 70-300VR goes for and see if canon has an equivelant..
Don't wait for the Nikon D-whatever, have fun now!http://www.flickr.com/photos/j_wijnands/..
The most important thing - as Judy pointed out - is how they feel in your hands and how easily you can get athe ocntrols, which is a matter of taste. Some people have said that they find the Canon a bit small and fiddly to hold; if that's the case for you then you won't enjoy using it. The technical differences between the two are trivial compared to the 'feel'..
I went to buy a Nikon D40 after endless reading of reviews and asking opinions... and came out of the shop 15 minutes later with a Pentax K100D because it felt nicer in my large hands.Mike..
I also ended up with the Pentax - K110D in my case, for much the same reason. I just found the Pentax a better camera for my taste..
