4.8 is hard to do, thus the price. It depends on how critical you are....

I am looking at dedicated 35mm slide/negative scanners and havepretty much decided on either the Nikon Coolscan V or the 5000..
Will I see a huge scan quality difference between the two, worththe extra money for the 5000?.
I'm not going to do batch scanning or APS scanning..
The dynamic range on the 5000 is 4.8 compared to 4.2 on the V..
Is this a huge difference?.
Comments appreciated.Thanks.Cindy.

I have the coolscan v and am completely satisfied with it. it does a terrific job on my slides..
You should know one thing before buying the scanner. and that is the size of the scans. from my slides it makes 131mb tiffs. therefore you have to have available considerable data storage capacity. as I never intended to scan in all my slides only the ones I want to digitalize I just include the scans with my other pics. I use a 300gb ext hrd drv for my primary pic storage, with another 300gb drv for backup. they currently have about 96gb on them...
It'll be difficult to find a photographer who owns both scanners. I actually own two CoolScan 5000's, both woth bulk feeders and have scanned over 10,000 slides in the past three years. I feel it's the best scanner for under $5000. Nikon has a product comparison sheet (CDP-444-11) which gives a side by side physical comparison of the two scanners. Both scanners can scan at two bit depths and the files will be either 65 or 130 megabytes if you scan at maximum resolution, which is the reason you are choosing one of these scanners. The 5000 scans at approximately half the speed of the V.
35 seconds..

Thanks very much for the info. I think I'll be needing an extra external hard drive for storage!!.
At least it's less expensive than than adding on to a house!.

Hi Larry - thanks for the information. I'll look up the comparison sheet - it'll be easier with the sheet # - and see if I can justify spending the extra cash. I don't want to scan every slide I have, just a few that I think I might be able to sell prints of..
Take care.Cindy.

Get the less expensive CoolScan V..
I host a forum of over 4,000 photographers that discuss marketing issues, mostly related to art shows. But other topics are more than welcome. Here's a link to my resource site:http://artshowphoto.com/.
