Newbie to cameras
Hi all,.

Im currently deciding between 2 cameras and would like to know about any suggestion anyone has. The 2 choices are:.

Sony Cybershot DSC-W80 and Canon Powershot DS1000..

IS is a nice feature that only the sony has, I'm also interested in low light pictures but dont know which is better for that..

Is there anything I should be aware of with these cameras? Also, do you recommend another camera in the $200-300 range..

I am also interested in a camera that has plenty of features and can learn from as well. Nothing too complex, but something a little more that point and shoot. Compactness is a must...

Fuji F31fd. It's in a class of it's own for low light...

Many Canons and Panasonics also have IS - very effective IS at that..

I would disagree with a poster who suggested IS is great for low light. The main advantage of IS is that it allows the camera to use a longer exposure ( like 1/10th sec instead of 1/50th ), which is certainly a way of getting more light, but means that moving objects blur. IS is good for static or slow moving subjects, and for longish zooms in good light, but NOT for low-light explicitly..

Best low-light compact - no contest - the Fuji F30 and F31 models. These make better use of available light, but lack IS..

For a larger camera ideal for low light try the Fuji S6000/6500. Same sensor as the F30 and F31, so good for low light, but again no IS..

Some other models to checkout : the Canon A570IS and the Panasonic TZ3..

Thank you everyone for your help. Reading more into the fuji FinePix F31 fd, i've decided to compare it to another camera that is also better than the others, the Canon sd750...i may try and get the fuji since ive been hearing better things about it than the canon. Not sure what everyones take is in this case..

Seriously, for low noise you've got dSLRs, then Fujis with the Super CCD, then the rest oh then the cheap cameras. The noise differences of Canon vs Pany vs Sony is so minor compared to what you'll get out of a F31. Now keep in mind, I use a TZ3 for all my sunny day shots super zoom, OIS, more reliable exposures, but falls flat after ISO 200 by comparison. I consider the F31 my 400+ speed film camera...

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I have decided and ordered the Fuji f31 fd. I even compared it to the canon a640. I looked over pictures of the Sony, Canon sd1000, sd750, a640...and still, I had to give it to Fuji. I think I was even trying to somehow persuade myself that Canon has to be better for some reason. Judging from the results of the pictures offered on this site and elsewhere...... Fuji wins..

Camera steadier at slower shutter speeds avoids blurring from camera shake.terryhttp://tbanet.zenfolio.com/..
