My favorite digicam for all round use is my Canon S5IS....I can do just about anything with it....it is a great multi-use cam...For what you want to do and other projects of other kinds in the future it is great...Super macro goes down to postage stamp sized items to fill the frame and has also many other features... the menu system is extremely intuitive and I did not look at the manual for the first 6 months...I get about 400 photos(many with flash)(will also allow a exernal flash to be mounted)with a set of lithium or rechargeables.... It will cost a little more but is well worth the investment...It also takes beautiful videos with stereo sound...8 megapixal with a 12x zoom... I do think it would be worth your while to go to canons site and read up on this fine camera...I have newer and so called beter cameras but I use this the most......al.

Before you buy anything else, check into a product soft box. This small piece of equipment is great for shooting products and is small enough to sit on any dining room table or work bench. You can use different colors of construction paper as backgrounds. As for your camera selection, sharpness is achieved by a good lens, not the camera body. If you do not have the bucks to spend on say a entry level Nikon DSLR, you may consider taking your products to a place that takes pictures for eBay customers. It may be cheaper in the short time until you can have the budget for a DSLR.

No, I am not a professional. Semi-pro would be a better descriptive word. I do shoot products from time to time with my D300 and found out that my back up cameras work just as well (from an experimental let me try this out type of situation). Hope this helps or gives you some options. There are so many videos on YouTube that can also help you out on photographing products..

J. long mentions the Samsung SL30 eating batteries. Well I bought my wife a SL30 Samsung Pink Camera while ago, and the batteries last extremely well if you use re-chargeables (AA Lithium). She often gets 400 or 500 pictures from one recharge..

Did you mean rechargeable NiMH AAs? I haven't seen rechargeable Lithium AAs..
