Have a look at epson perfection 3490 photo series.Alot cheaper than your quote.Colour restore ,Dust Removal, and a lot of other controls to play with...
I purchased the CanoScan CS8600F one month ago and have been pounding the hell out of it since. I've scanned approximately 3000 photos and 35mm negatives. I researched different scanners for about a month before puchasing it. I'm very happy with this scanner. I purchased it through Amazon, free shipping, etc... It's the best scanner I've owned.
Just check the features and feedback at Amazon. Good luck!.

After you have done about five you will forget the idea of doing a thousand. Believe me!Jules.

Hi Dave,.
Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to order the CanoScan CS8600F tonight. It looks and sounds like a nice scanner..
I do have one more question. One of the people who reviewed it said he would not buy one again because of the noise!? He said it has a high pitch sound? I'm sure it can't be that bad..
Thanks so much!.
Tim..
I just bought myself an Epson Perfection 4990 photo scanner, after reading a lot of reviews on the net. I've been so busy that I have not yet used it. But like you, I also have a zillon old family photos that need to be scanned..
The 4990 has Digital ICE and comes with a good software suite..
It's now being sold with a $100 rebate. I got mine from Buydig.com. for $398. After rebate it's $298. The rebate is good till 9/30/07...
It's slightly less noisy than the other scanner's I've owned. I don't really know how to describe it.... it makes a "scanning" sound as the arm runs the length of the bed. I'm using Windows XP and the software and drivers are painless and they work really well. If you have Vista I think there was an issue with one of the software packages not being supported... yet? Not sure.
Dave..
