A Canon 17-85 will completely replace your kit lens - I wouldn't really see much point in keeping an 18-55..
With 17-85/18-135, I think the general consensus is that both are decent lenses and about as versatile as you can get, but not quite up with the best of them in regards to image quality..
I think the 85-135 range that the Nikon has makes it effectively an all-in-one lens - pretty much covers the 28-200 range on a 35mm SLR. With the 17-85, you may miss the telephoto end a bit, but perhaps your type of photography will never go there...
The high ISO performance is quite good on 400D, don't hesitate to use ISO 400 and 800. I will start with the kit lens, and get the 85mm f/1.8 (or the 50mm f/1.8 if 85mm is too long for you).YongboPhoto Gallery: http://www.photo96.com/.

Thanks Nathan Yan and yongbo for your suggestions..
Thinking again of the kind of photographs I may take, it is very essential for me to get a good wide angle and telephoto range from my lens, which I think will be a problem with the Canon 17-85 / 18-55..
Also I am not sure whether Canon has a budget lens of the range similar to Nikon 18-135..
I have decided not to go for the 17-85 lens from my friend. I can better play arounnd with the Kit lens for less money and buy a better one later (if I am going for Canon 400D).
Btw, Could you now pls suggest me a fairly good package of Camera body + lens for each Canon 400D and Nikon D80?.
1. I need good wide angle and telephoto range.2. For scenery, and portrait photographs...
It actually matters what you think a portrait is..
If you want pictures that sow one person, from the belt buckle to the top of the head, nicely posed, the 18-55mm Canon lens is really very good at this. The 18mm end of the 18-55mm lens is good for landscapes and scenery with a lot of area included not really, really large areas, but good enough for most pictures..
Later, save up and buy some other lens, but, if you get the Canon, start off with the 18-55. It's a fine lens for a great many pictures..
BAK..
I recommend you read what others have to say about most of the available lenses on the market today, it will give you a better feel for what to buy! I just bought a Canon 24-105 4L after reading about what others said about thier experiences with that lense & I am happy with my choice.

Good Luck..
You can also consider the Canon 10-22mm, it's a very sharp lens. But, if the kit lens is only 20 more, take it. Most of these are from the kit lens:http://www.photo96.com/yongbo/gallery_landscape.htmYongboPhoto Gallery: http://www.photo96.com/.

Hello everybody,.
Thanks for your replies. I can get the kit lens without much additional cost. So there is no point in buying an additional lens without playing around with the kit lens, if I am getting a Canon 400D. I can save a lot of money and invest it later..
In fact I think it goes for any camera. Be it Canon 400D or Nikon D80..
Laks..
Could you please suggest me a great package to put together for the D80 18-135?..
