Need a little advice
I am looking at gettng a new camera in the next couple of monthes. Its gonna be for personal use and I am trying to choose between a Nikon D40/D40x and a Canon Rebel 350/400. I am trying to balance cost but still get something that will last for a few years. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Either of these camera's is gonna work great, and deliver great pictures.Depending on who you ask, you will get recommendations for one over the other..

My suggestion: It comes down to ergonomics. Got to a photo store and try out each one. How does it fit in your hand, how are the controls laid-out. Without reading the users manual, try and see how easy each one is to useWarm regards,DOFThere is no satisfactory substitute for excellenceDr. Arnold O. Beckman..

I'm a recent purchaser of a D40 and have been very happy with it so far. Having never owned a Canon, I can't compare the two. But I understand the D40 is distinguished from other DSLRs in it's lightweight and small size; in it's incorporation of photo settings (ISO, aperture, etc.) into the back LCD, in lieu of a top LCD panel; and in it's need for lenses to have a built-in motor to autofocus. If like me you don't own older Nikon-mount lenses this is less of an issue..

I think it's a great camera, but like the first poster said, it's a good idea to get a feel for it in a store to see if you like the ergonomics...

I would take a strong look at the K100D or K100D special. They are small DSLR's that offer a top LCD panel, AS and great lens compatability...

I am Nikon biased, but ergnomics is probably the biggest answer that I see posted on this site. Makes sense, it's just got to feel right..

If iwas to choose between Canon and Nikon I would always buy Canon but that is just a personal view. In respect though to yourself I would def if in your position look at the new olympus E510 or wait and c what the next Sony DSLR looks like. The reason is both of these cameras have Image Stabilisation in teh body of teh camera and not in expensive lenses like on both the 2 you have listed..

I personally use Minoltas myself though now they r replaced by Sony's. I changed from Canon to these cos of the cost of IS lenses in the Canon range. So I hope that helps you...

I just bought the Nikon D40 about 3 months ago and I love it!!.

I'm an amateur photographer and still have a lot to learn when it comes to taking pictures. But I have to say the Nikon is great! Very simple and takes great pictures!!!....

Here's a sample of some of the pictures I took with this camera at one of my friend's wedding.....

Hope this was helpful!!  ..

After you read and compare all the specs of these cameras, read reviews and comments, you should (must!) go to a camera store, hold them both, mess with the controls, look through the viewfinder, take pics if you can. If you're still undecided when you get to the store, you will know which camera is for you after your visit..

Read up on both cameras, the positives and negatives of each, and keep in mind, that you buying into a system, not only the camera and lens that comes with it..

I have the D40x and love it...
