Looking for best dslr
I am looking in to getting a new dslr. I am trying to choose between the nikon d80, nikno d40x or the canon eos 400d. Before I made the purchase I wanted to see if anyone had any advise on which would be the best option for landscape photos...

Camera does not matter. Find yourself a good lens. Then buy whatever camera that'll attach to it..

Lens > Camera.

First off, for landscape you don't need speed. therefore the advantage that the canon has in speed [iso speed...] is negligibleand practically non-existent when using a tripod [which landscape photography allows...] and frame ratyes are of no consequence..

Resolution is the top priority for landscape, and the d80 and the canon are more or less equivalent there. so then it comes down to other considerations. the canon kit lenses are inferior to the nikon kit lenses from what i've seen. so unless you are intending to upgrade immediately from the kit lenses I think your stated goals argue for the d80 [which I think is also a bit more robust than this particular canon.].

Finally let me leave you with this: as far as I can see the best deal out there right now is for the olympus e-330 2 lens kits available from cameta camera auctions as low as $519 [refurbsi have one and it's just fine] to $619 new with a 2gb card. the one kit lens is equivalent[in 35mm] to 100-300mm and gives ok results [better than the equivalent canon] and the other is equivalent to 28-90mm and is one of the best kit lenses made. and cameta is very reliable, quick service, no hanky panky..

$619 for a dslr with 2 lenses and a 2gb card is a heck of a deali'd like to see someone come up with a better one. and that e-330 id a terrific camera with unusual features, most notably an articulating dial live view screenreally handy for tripod and macro work, and real nice for street/travel shooting as well...

Pretty robust advice from the above poster, but are you buying a DSLR *just* to shoot landscapes and nothing else?.

Because when you want to shoot protraits, sports, wildlife etc, then other things come into play, and again, all of those subjects have an array of lenses to do the job right, and in betweeners that are good for general puropouse elnses..

For me, clarity and a sharp picture are everything, so for me ISO settings to get a faster shutter speed were key..the canon range has good ISO in that it isn't grainy as other brands..

You really cant go far wrong with any of the models you mention...but remember that you are buying tonto a 'system' as well as a camera..

Personally, id choose between the Nion d80 and the canon eos 400d..

I went for the canon 400d...but thats not to say I dont think the nikon d80 isnt an outstanding camera..it is an outstanding camera ..

I tried the 400D, d40X, d80..

The results of pictures taken with the d80 is outstanding using 18-20vr and 70-300vr lens...

Are you shooting ONLY landscape photos? Then any DSLR on the market will do, as they're all capable of getting excellent results. They all have excellent sensors and image processors..

However, if you're planning to shoot landscapes in poor weather (rain, snow), then another alternative is the Pentax K10d. It's a relatively affordable DSLR with weather sealing that protects it against rain and sand. It also has built-in image stabilization in the body. In the Nikon range, you have to upgrade all the way up to the D200 to get weather sealing. Also, Pentax has the best range of prime lenses for consumer DSLRs, bar none. (Prime lenses are non-zooming lenses - which means they are much simpler in construction and give much sharper results than zoom lenses.

However, if you're planning to shoot things beyond landscapes, such as sports, then I would recommend the Nikon D80. It has the best autofocus system and overall responsiveness in it's price range. You should couple it with a high-quality zoom lens...

There is no 'best DSLR for landscapes' or 'best DSLR for indoor shooting' or whatever. The current cameras from Nikon / Canon / Oly / Pentax / Sony are all excellent and do exactly the same thing in the same way. Extra money buys you facilities like high burst rates, more robust build quality, and weatherproofing... but a landscape pic taken on a Nikon D40 (bottom end of the market) and the Canon 1D (top end of the market, 10x more expensive) will be basically indistinguishable as long as they are correctly exposed and use the same lens. Yes you might be able to count the different numbers of pixels if you enlarged then to a meter square and looked at them with a magnifying glass, but beyond that....

By far the most important part of a camera is the user; worrying too much about which camera to take your pictures with is a bit like worrying about which is the best word-processing package to write your novels with. So decide what your budget is, and then go and handle the cameras in a shop. the feel in your hands is just as important as the other technical attributes and only you can decide what fits your hands best. Whichever one you like best within your budget will be a good choice, don't worry about it..

As others have said, all these will be fine - just go to a store and handle them and choose which feels best for you..

I would favour the (larger, heavier) D80 over the D40x owing to it's ability to use non-USM lenses (i.e. the ones that need the camera body to drive them, as the D40x can't do that)..

For landscapes it's the lenses that count. Sigma do a nice 10-20mm that is available for both Canon and Nikon (and would work on the D40x)..

Dont waste time to get more answers, go to a store, hold the cameras, take the one that you feel best comfortable with, get a good wide lens for the camera and go ahead, shoot & enjoy...http://budding-nature-photographer.blogspot.com/..
