Either the Panny LS or LZ cameras. They have image stabalization, take double AA's and use SD. Can get 6x zoom on LZ7 and is easy to hold for less than $200 I know above budget but we bought a camera for a 5 year old and he doesn't abuse it. You will probably borrow it from him..

My 8 year old son just started asking for a digital camera. He keepsasking for the Crayola camera or one of the other kids cameras. I'dprefer to get him a "real" digital camera that will let him expandhis horizons in the digital photography world..
I'd prefer it to use AA batteries since I have several sets ofrechargables. I'd like it to take decent pictures. After all, partof the fun of photography is sharing the pics. I'd prefer SD cards, once again, I have some of them. Finally, since it's for an 8 y.o.boy, it should not be very expensive (less than $100). I don't wantto worry a lot about him breaking it..
So anyone have any suggestions? Anything particular models I shouldavoid?.

The Canon A460 is an incredible bargain at the moment and also a great camera. You can't go wrong with it. It has a 4x zoom too, which is better than average..
I'd avoid anything cheap by Kodak, Nikon or Olympus..

Ebay has a lot of 'last year's models' advertised as new or nearly new for very low prices - e.g. a 4MP Nikon Coolpix for 50 - something like that would be great to start with.Mike..

No, you're better off spending 79 on a brand new A460 and getting a camera that works well..

You're right - I hadn't realised the A460 was so cheap. That is a real bargain.Mike..
Thanks for all the suggestions. That budget is not firm. Anyone ever seen the Aiptek cheap cameras? Some of those are well within that budget, but will it last him more than a month?.
I will definately take a look at that Cannon.F_M..
How about an Olympus 770SW.
It's shockproof, crushproof and water proof to 33' in other words very childproof.Takes great shots.A member of the rabble in good standing...
Anything else shcock proof and water resistant in the indicated $100 price range?..
Sounds great, but at $400, that's a bit out of my range. I could go to $150 or $200, but that's about it right now..

The Pentax Optio and Olympus Stylus lines have both had weather proof cams in the past as well as now. Have a look for some going cheap and check their specs if you find one..
To be honest for an eight year old, I;d be inclined to suggest cheapest camera of any sort, because the most likely event is losing it ! And kids go for fun things like small key-ring cameras anyway..

I'd suggest a Kodak C533 being 1) under a $100, 2) produces excellent result on auto and 3) has an LCD screen for review. Kids like to see the results of there efforts immediately so whatever you get should have a reasonably decent LCD for review...

Cheap and very nasty..

I've been looking for a camera for my daughter for almost a year now. she's just turned 4. we've been buying her disposable film cameras and getting the negs scanned to cd. I really want a digital camera for her but she drops her cameras frequently. the disaposables don't have straps, obviously the digital would. this might make a difference..
Here's what i'm looking for:0. rugged1. decent picture quality (must be at least 2MP, VGA doesn't cut it)2. lcd screen for picture review3. easy to use4. prefer no optical zoom5.
Manufacturers of kids cameras seem to think that kids don't need more than VGA resolution. this annoys me. and most camera manufacturers have pushed optical zoom to their lowerst models (e.g., canon and nikon don't make any cameras without optical zoom)..
So far I have been unsuccessful at finding anything that comes close to the above list...
You're going to have to forgo "rugged" at that price point..
Really, your best bet is eBay and CraigsList...get used, and consider them as disposable as the cameras you're buying now...
