K10D or D80 Price a consideration
Greetings all,.

I've been doing quite a bit of Reaseach and the more I read the more questions I have. I travel a lot for work and have not used an SLR since my K1000 cost and time of processing spoiled it for me. I did shoot often with a 50mm and had a kit zoom of dimensions I can't recall now..

I shoot:.

- travel type shots - landscape and people.

- indoor sport where a flash cannot be used under flurescent light(fencing) can get close to the action but need good (DOF)- Functions in the evening- Occasional Night Shots.

I avoid using a flash when ever possible as I prefer candid photoes when shooting people..

This is where I am at the moment:.

Option 1. Can get a K10D with a Sigma 20-40/2.8 AUD1600.

Option 2. D80 $1600AUD body only + a 17-55 2.8 getting closer to double the price (or a 50mm + a zoom to compliment).

I can afford more and will likely extend my kit in the future to include something VR if I go with Nikkon. I've also considered getting the D80 with a 50mm and getting used to the camera before buying more lenses..

Appreciate any advice to take me into the realm of digital..

One more question:.

I'll be in shanghai this weekend and hongkong in a few weeks. If anyone has any comments on purchasing in China/HK I'd appreciate the advice. If insurance is an issue I'm not going to tit for tat over a small amount for the piece of mind..

Hi James,.

I am in Australia too and planning travel to HK but I decided to buy my camera here because there is no international warranty for Nikon DSLR (I chose the D80 but the K10D is a fine camera too..

Might be a silly questions but do your current lenses fit on the K10D?.

Good luck with your research! Go have a hold, the second I picked up the D80 it felt at home in my hands, the buttons were in the right places for my fingers to reach when scrolling thorugh menus but mor importantly, when I am looking through VF I have comfy access to front and back command dials and can see shutter and av and it is not too far a reach to ae-l/af-l or func button..

I came from pentax slr but their dslr builds just did not suit me and since I knew I would be getting new lenses either way I moved to Nikon..

Thanks for the advice, I played instore with a D80 today and it fits in my big hand quite nicely. The controls seem to make sense too even just mucking about for the 1st time..

I'm leaning towards a 50mm 1.4 and a short end kit zoom 18-55 to give me something to play with until I get the whole digital thing down pat. Then try to get some nice zooms once I'm sure about what I want..

By the way I'm in Sydney to  Nice to get home grown advice. I'll play with the K10D in store tomorrow before I make my decision..

Is the K10D the pentax model with image stabilsation?.

This will help you in no flash/low light situations so it may be the right way to go for you..

The fact is that buying lenses with wide apertures is more expensive that going for in body IS...

Good decision. I have the D40x (I like light and small) and bought the surprisngly good kit lens. (Unfortunately, I can't use my 50/1.4). It's really light and takes great pictures. If advanced amateur get the 18-200VR later and you'll never need to worry about stabilization again. Or save money and get the 55-200VR a steal at $249.

IMHO, it's either Nikon or Canon. Pentax is good but not enough lenses or buyers...

Yep. In body..

Pentax has many decent fast primes that are comparatively cheaper than the offerings from Nikon and Canon, and are more compact to boot...

Keep in mind the crop factor on most DSLRs (1.5x on the D80, probably something in that vicinity on the K10D)..

A 50mm lens on a D80 will "act like" a 75mm lens does on a film camera, while a 35mm lens on a D80 will act like a 52.5mm one on a film SLR...

K10D + 20-40 2.8 sigma bought and paid for..

Thanks for any/advice that you guys passed on directly or indirect. I'll try to post some photoes before long..

What finally tilted me away from the Nikon.

- Weather Sealing- Image Stabilisation in body- Great deal on the body/lense- Price of Nikkor VR lenses.

Thanks,.
