just have bought Canon A630...
Well, loks like both more and less than I bargained for. Lens disappointed me a bit, frankly, distortion is very noticeable in city shots, with lots of vertical walls. Some CA, but nowhere near my old cam (or so it seems so far.).

IQ, is well... It is. Sometimes I like output of that antique Samsung more, but then, I used Canon for just a few hours..

And yes, manual modes are "ZE REVOLOOSHN!!!" , as is viewfinder. Both are very handy, were main reasons for upgrade, and I'm not disappointed..

And that AiAF thing... I'm sure It's somewhere in 4 manuals that are on CDROM, but what exactly it does, is it useful, and why not just focus at the center?..

Why not indeed. In your menu under AF Frame you have three choices: AiAF, Center, FlexiZone. Put it on center if you prefer that..

I never use any type of flex focus. I dont want to have to look at the LCD to find out what the camera is focused on. I always use center focus and pre-focus on what I want in focus. Fortunately most of the time the thing I want in focus is also the same thing I want metered since the camera also meters with the half-press..

Even with an EVF I seldom use any focus but center. It is easier to manage the focus points with an EVF, but I still prefer to not mess with it..

The A630 seems to be well thought of with an excellent lens. Whatever image editor you use will probably take the PTLens plug-in. It is $15 and worth the price if barrel distortion is bothering you. PTLens looks at the EXIF and automatically corrects the barrel distortion..

With buildings most of what you are seeing is probably not distortion but perspective. Shoot wide angle and the tops seem to converge. I dont agree with taking it all out with an image editor, but taking some out helps without completely messing up the perspective your camera is seeing..

Post some photos with the EXIF intact and people can help you judge whether you got a bad camera or just need some advice in using it. It is one of the best cameras for that price on the market...

After a second look I must agree, - there is far less actual distortion than I thought initially, I was mostly scared by the shot below, but we don't expect perfect image in the corners for that price, at least....

(Downsampled image and some crops. Sorry, underexposed a little, Tv mode has it downsides too  ).

Quite impressive. Maybe that AiAf is useful, after all....

No complaints about tele end.  When I can hold camera steady, that is..

Sunset. Again, some CA, and. again not at all how I want to shoot that bridge, but cam itself isn't the problem here. .

The distortion (ur photos) is called "converging verticals", and is natural when you look up a tall object. Perfectly normal. Even the best of lens will have that distortion. As you go away from subject the phenomenon will be less and less noticeable.Only editing can remove that.Regards, Ajayhttp://picasaweb.google.com/ajay0612..

Yes, as I said, most of it is, on second look. Probably just haven't got used to 8MP output. But, converging verticals ate straight, and those spires are curved, so part of it is distortion too...

Sorry, I forgot to set correct WB, so they are postproed a bit to fix that. But overall, I'm very impressed too. Macro AF is slow, but more or less accurate, unlike the old cam (probably because AiAf assumes whatever is moving as a subject.) There's MF too, but, unfortunately, with fairly low resolution display it is of limited use, when you view LCD from a distance. Anyway, rate of good shots wv out of focus obviously went up....

And when things are in focus, results are quite stunning. (Probably, it is one of the situations where Mpixs do matter... ).

Same bumblebees, same place, lot more detail. And works on thistles!.
