Is the tripod mount standard?
HiI want to buy a cleaning kit for my powershot s3I saw two similar kitsOne for camcorders including a camcorder tripodthe second for digital camera including the same items except the tripodand the difference in price is so small...

So should I go for the first one? is the tripod for camcorder the same as for digicam?.

Thanks in advance..

Still and small video cameras use the same 1/4-20 internally threaded socket in the camera and a 1/4-20 screw on the tripod. I suspect if the price difference is small the tripod is a tabletop tripod. The shape factor generally prevents a camcorder from standing upright on a table whereas a still camera will general stand upright by itself. That probably the basis for the nameing of the kits. That's not to say a tabletop tripod is useless for still cameras, just less general value. If the price difference is small I wouldn't expect too much of the tripod but it might still be useful for occasional close-up work...

Some mounts for camcorders have a second pin in line with the lens axis to help prevent rotation. Not a problem for still cameras if the pin can be removed...

Video pods may have a head that doesn't adjust to portrait orientation. I have some suspicions that the "kit" may not be as good a value as it seems. You may want to compaare it to similar items priced separately at a place like B&H or Adorama...

Thank you for your replies.

Yes it is a table top tripod but I need it when using the self timer to get in the picture, a part of the table surface takes a part of the pictures, so for only 30 LE difference betwenn the two kits (which is about $5), I think it is useful, what do you see?.

When a camcorder tripod is announced, do they normally mean the one with pin or the one without? Here is an image for the kit:.

Do you see the pin?.

For the price.. I know it isn't much a good value, but normally prices here are higher than other countries, however, if I order it form BH or Adorama, and after adding the shipping prices and the high customs, prices will come as close, but with the risk of recieving a damaged kit.. so getting it from my local branch of radioshack is much better for me...

Please share any further notes or opinions you haveThanks..

The tripod screw is standard. All cameras (with a few exceptions in high end professional models) have the same threaded tripod socket..

I'd suggest that the kit isn't too impressive as pictured so maybe you can simply get a blower or blower brush and cleaning fluid, cleaning tissues separately for less...

Thanks for your reply.

For about how much I can get each item seperately? The whole kit is about $30.

Is there a store from which I can get it shipped to egypt at a less price? Thanks in advance..

Even if you found it or the different items somewhere else cheaper, you probably won't save much if you go through import with shipping and perhaps duties. But companies like B&H do ship internationally so they might have some prices for shipping on their site...
