Like he said, also you can simulate zooming in post-processing by cropping..
- Jay..
That's what is known as a "prime" lens. It has a fixed focal length and doesn't zoom...
Be careful walking backwards....you could walk into a busy street.....
Also, if you crop in Post., this will simulate a using a longer lens, than that which was on the camera...This was croped about 30%..

Don't be sensitive, from time to time we all ask questions that light up the brain with a clever response... .
You have a "prime" lens. Generally speaking prime lenses have Better quality than a zoom. Modern zooms are closing the gap, but nonetheless a prime is a prime -.
And in some sense even the humourus advice you were given is actually good advice. You bet, walk forward and walk back, and apprecite the quality that will result. You will also learn much more about photoraphy from your Prime then you would from a zoom..

But isn't it fun to zoom with your feet? I had the "luxury of owning a K1000 with 28, 50 and 135mm primes. It is great to have a compact SLR with a small lens..
Now, I have a DSLR that is the same size and still like to use a couple small primes, because it keeps the camera small and one gets nicer photos..
If you like the 50, look into getting a prime in the 24-35mm range. That would be more like a "normal" lens on a film camera. Also, look into a Zenitar 16 fish eye in an eos mount. ultra wide, ultra fun...

I don't know about "fun" but it sure teaches a bit about framing... .
Dave..
It's fun alright, except when you are at Niagara Falls or the Grand Canyon!.

Or your shoulder blades are against the wall so you cannot back off any further and you do not have everything in the frame - Or you walk backwards viewing your framing ... into the swimming pool!.

Thanks so much for all the helpful info. I really appreciate it...
My father in law years ago asked another "tourist" to shoot a picture of him and my mom in front of St Patrick Cathedral in NYC with his SLR and fixed lens, the "tourist" kept walking back so that "he could get more of the cathedral in the frame"...until he was safely far enough to run away with the camera...Equipment in profile...
Hey...good question on zooming...hope you got that zooming thechnique nailed!.
Let me share... I had the kit lens.. bought the 50mm f1.8 as my second lens on the good recommendations of many. Wife and I had a 2 week roadtrip across the US planned... knew I'd be bringing the camera and BOTH lenses... I wanted to get good colors, and had heard a circular polorizer was the way to go...so I bought one after checking the lens diameter on the front of the 50mm f1.8....
Shot almost all my Grand Canyon pics with that darn 50mm lens..and a few wide shots with kit lens w/o poloirizer. Lesson learned... check ALL lens front diameters, and get the biggest polorizer you can afford...and step rings to mount it on other lens sizes...
Prime lenses such as the 50mm f/1.8 do not have a zoom capability. The only way you can reduce/enlarge your subject is to get closer or further away..
Not to be smug, but I highly suggest that you read some very basic photo instructional materials and/or Internet sites:.

I have been to the grand canyon with my K1000 and Sears 28 macro. It did a great job. It was a lot of fun too except for the ice storm and heavy wind...
Thank you all, so much. I went out and practiced yesterday at our Shakespeare Festival. Some of them turned out great, some not so great. I did get the blurred background when I set my mode to AV...not so much when it was in automatic mode. I will be doing a lot of practicing during this week before our trip. The quality of the pics from this camera is so much different than those of my other camera. It is amazing how much clearer these are..
Again, thanks so much to all of you for your help...
Once they've discovered what's going on they won't warn you as you are about to walk back and go A(pex) over B(ase) into something nasty or wet or both... It will be fun for them though..
Regards, David..
