If your Nikon D50 has an "Auto ISO" setting I would use it. This will allow you to concentrate on getting the shot and less on exposure..

I shoot a lot of night-time sports. I set my D2H on an ISO of 1000, manual exposure, 1/250 shutter to stop the action, f/2.8 and use my SB-800 set on 0 compensation in the TTL BL configuration...

If I'm not using flash, I set on shutter priority of 1/250 and an ISO of 1600, then use a good noise reduction program during post process. A lot of these shots come out under exposed, but I don't like going much slower than 1/250 because of motion blur., I will go down to 1/125 if I have too, but no slower..

Don't be afraid of ISO 1600, and use fill flash if you have an external flash..

If you live in an area where you can rent lenses, a 70 or 80-200/2.8 would be great...

I don't shoot Nikon, but for night time HS football, you will need an f2.8 lens. Do you have the 70-200 f2.8 VR lens? You will most likely need to shoot at f2.8 and ISO 1600 to get decent shutter speeds. You will want to get at least 1/400 or 1/500 to stop the action. Don't underexpose when shooting at high ISO, since the noise will kill you. If the jersey is white, you will need to add +2/3 EC. I would shoot in aperture priority using servo AF and center weighted metering...
