Help with DSRL possible buy (prices included)
Hello,.

I want to buy a DSLRs, but there are a lot of difficult decissions to make. A couple of weeks before, I was sure that I wanted a EOS 400D (Rebel XTi)... but right now, I am confussed..

The problem started when I read such bad critics about the kin lens for the EOS400D... Then I started looking at the Nikon D80, which costs some more, but seems to have some advantages, and I have read good things about the 18-70 mm kit lens..

But, yesterday, looking at the prices, I found that the Canon 30D is (slightly) cheaper than the D80. I though that the 30D is a step higher than the D80???.

1199 D8018-70 DXCamera bagTripodSD 2Gb card.

1049 30DEF 18-55 IS (Is this a canon lens? I didn't found it in slrgear.com)CF Pro 4Gb 100x cardExtra battery.

869 400DEF 18-55CF Pro 4Gb 100x cardExtra batteryTripod.

I think there is one additional option, which is a 400D with a Tamron 18-200mm, mem card and so on for 1069 ... Tamron 18-200 seems to be not a bad lens, but I am a bit worried with the IQ of a lens with such big zoom..

One of the problems I see with the 30D is that it seems more bulky than the D80....

Considering that one of the things I love about photography are panoramic and wide angle shots, maybe I should go for the EOS 400D and spent the saving in a Sigma 10-22mm... don't know..

I will apreciate any comments or suggestions... Thanks a lot!..

Why?.

It does. But you can also get a good lens for your 400d..

But, yesterday, looking at the prices, I found that the Canon 30D is(slightly) cheaper than the D80. I though that the 30D is a stephigher than the D80???.

No... well... not according to me. It's about the same class..

Very fine set..

1049 30DEF 18-55 IS (Is this a canon lens? I didn't found it in slrgear.com)CF Pro 4Gb 100x cardExtra battery.

OK, that is a bit cheaper but it's also quite a bit less lens..

Nothing much wrong with this either..

You should be. As superzooms go it's not that bad..

One of the problems I see with the 30D is that it seems more bulkythan the D80....

Is that really the case? Have you checked?.

Have you handled both of these? Which one appeals the most?.

So instead of helping me you are putting another variable into the equation? .

Thanks a lot for pointing me to that thread, I will investigate about the Oly... unfortunatelly, sometimes it looks like there is no life out of Canon and Nikon...

Are you sure about EF18-55IS?, as far as I know you only have an EFS18-55 an EFS 18-55IS (expensive) and an EFS17-85IS. Seehttp://www.photozone.de.

Other options, the Canon 10-22 and the Tokina 12-24. As far as I know most prefer the Canon 10-22. And since you like wide angle, don't bother about the kitlens. Its a decent lens for it's price and a nice starter lens. See this http://forums.dpreview.com/...forums/read.asp?forum=1031&message=22856208.

Think you missed 2 very important options - the Pentax K10D & Samsung GX-10 (same camera really).

Sorry to complicate the issue but these 2 are available at excellent prices now - I just bought the Samsung GX-10 Twin lens kit, very impressed !!.

Thanks for your reply..

According to the fact sheet here in dpreview, the 30D is more than 100g. heavier than the D80. Since I know that I will gear my camera around in a lot of travels (or so I expect), I would like to avoid extra weight (without sacrificing features or IQ, of course)..

I have had in my hand both the XTi and the D80, and I must say that the D80 feels better for me, although I was expecting a bigger difference in the viewfinder in favor of the D80...

I have investigated about the Olympus E510 and found it promising. The built-in IS and the working (the XTi one seems to be a gimmick) dust cleaner are nice features..

However, I am a bit concerned about the 4:3 aspect ratio. Maybe it is not so important, but I don't really like the idea of shooting in a different format than the classic one. Also the 2x crop factor seems to be an inconvenient for the wide angle shots that I love so much (yes, I am aware that there is a 7-14mm lens available, but the price is just too much for me)..

I will try to get one in my hands to see how it feels, but for the moment I put it in a third place...

4:3 is one of several classic aspect ratios. 5:4 being a little more professional and 3:2 being a late comer and a bit difficult to fit on to 8" x 10" (which is also 5:4): although it does fit exactly on to 4" x 6"..

Have you read this: http://www.olympus-esystem.com/ and this: http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/oly-e/index.html.

It was Edison (I think) who created 35 mm film by using Kodak's 70 mm split down the middle and then perforated. He used it at $:3 and then the first 35 mm still cameras doubled it to 3:2, a pity the glossy paper makers never found out....

Regards, David..

The other variable is how newcomers are treated in various forums. I'd have a good look in both the popular makers' and the niche ones..

Regards (again), David..

If you look at the 400d (entry level dSLR), you should look at the D40 (nikon), pentax K100d et cetera... not the D80 (amateurlevel)...

If weight is an issue, you might want to check the olympus 510, the Nikon d40 or the Canon 400d. Avoid cameras like the D80, Pentax K10 etc... they are considerably heavier and bigger... and no, they won't give you better IQ...

100 grams looks like a lot but it's the same weight as half a cup of water..

Then, if you can afford it, why not go for the D80?.
