Help needed!! Recommend a good digital camera.
Next week I am heading to London to watch the Tour de France. My current camera is pretty useless so I am looking to buy a new one in the next few days..

I'd like to capture a nice range of shots, ranging from clean and crisp action shots to perhaps some with blurred background, blurred subject etc. Bear in mind that these guys will be hammering along at speeds in excess of 30mph..

Aside from using it in London, I'd like a camera for good everyday use, preferably one where I can tinker with aperture and ISO as I'd like to be more involved in my photographs than just pressing the auto button..

Hope you can help, thanks...

I should have noted before that I'm willing to spend around 200-250 ($400-500), possibly could be tempted to nearer 300 ($600)...

Check out the Ricoh GX100. I'd get one if I had that budget...

I have two compacts. fuji f31fd which is good for indoor shooting and has speed. also my new one is the G7, very good picture quality. both camera you can play with manual settings (aperture etc). both recommended.1st pic is of f31 in aperture mode2nd g7 in aperture3rd g7 in general.4th pic is of a G7 in camera setting called color accent (all in camera, no pp).

Have only had the g7 for a few days now, these are the only samples I can come up with for now.G7 is the pick for me if you have the money.f31 if your on a budget.hope this helps.

That's funny. Has it been like that for a long time ?

The Grand Depart usually takes place outside of France roughly every two years. Luxembourg 2002, Liege 2004, London 2007, Monaco 2009...

You didn't mention anything about the size of the camera you're looking for. I f you really want something that is more than a point and shoot with lots of manual controls then you may want ot look at a bridge/prosumer camera like the ones below. If you're looking for a compact camera, then the Panasonic TZ3, Fuji f40, or the canon A570 models are all good choices, but they don't give you quite as much creative control..

Some good bridge cameras:.

Fuji S9100 or S6000Panasonic FZ50Canon powershot S5 IS.

After reading reviews I like the look of the Canon G7 and Lumix FZ50. The TZ3 is also pretty appealing, if anywhere has it in stock!!..

I wasn't clear, I was referring to the TZ3, and I didn't realize you were 'across the pond'. Buydig.com also had them at a good price..
