Good composition book
Hi,.

I am programmer by trade and have never owned a camera before so I don't know the first thing about taking compelling pictures..

I wish to improve my skills so I have taught myself exposure basics by reading Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure (an awesome book by the way). So now I know which settings to use to take pictures..

I have read composition is what differentiates compelling photographs from amateur snapshots. So, which composition book should I buy? I know some might say the best method is to learn by working in the field (which I can relate to as this is the same advice I give to people when they ask me about programming books). But I need to learn some rules/techniques/etc before I can start learning by doing..

Thanks for help!..

I've read some postings suggesting reading the wikipedia section on camera composition. Never read it myself but thought I'd mention it...

They say a picture says 1000 words. If so, then maybe the gallery of photos I put together illustrating some of the principles of compostion may be of help. They are certainly not rules, but guides..

Just go out an experiment with composition, and have fun with your camera!.

I appreciate your help..

As I mentioned I need to learn composition rules. Which book would you recommend for that?..

Why don't you take a look at some of the books available at Amazon, and read reader reviews..

I taught the principles of composition years ago when I was an art teacher, so thinking about it comes second nature to me. As a result, I haven't read any current books on the subject..

In the examples I gave you, the principle is named: for example, The Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines. Googling the terms will bring up a lot of helpful info and examples..

Thanks for the kind words but, if you're referring to the photo compostion examples, most of them are others'. I sought out the image under the Creative Commons license..

Btw, which camera/lens did you use?.

If you are referring to some of my pix, I've use/used a variety of cameras, the main ones listed in my signature below..

Please remember too, that I crop images. It's rare that I get the "perfectly" composed image with the snap of the shutter, though it can happen once and a while..

For example..

Go to the library and take out some books on fine art, the masters. Deconstruct them and figure out what makes a simple girl standing there so great..

It's not a trite remark. Study the works that appeal to you and then break them down. Try to duplicate them, not copy them, but if you see a picture of a window and a vase of flowers look real hard at it and find out what makes it tick..

If you buy a formula book you will be uninspired.Jim..
