Girlfriend wants to learn photography.....
Hey,.

My girlfriend is wonderful and puts up with my photography obsession. She wants to get into photography. She has a flickr account. Any suggestions in terms of online resources or books to give her a good grasp of concepts?.

She'll prob be working with a song DSC-F707 prosumer cam or a p&s canon SD 550..

If she really starts to get into it she might move up to a d40 or d50 so I could loan her lenses and such..

Thanks,.

Bill.

My girlfriend, who became my wife about 40 years ago, started taking pictures (when you had to focus and set aperture and shutter speed) and quickly became a better photographer than me. So you may have to live with this fact.Leonard Migliore..

I hope so. It's a great hobby for me and I think it would be a nice thing to share.

I was never really able to grasp anything from the books I got..

Then, I tried an adult education class taught by one of the sales guys at a local camera store. I learned more in *one class* than I did in all the books I had bought, and a semester-long photography class in college!..

I think I might encourage her to take a Photojournalism class at college. I went to the same University and jst graduated. The class really sparked my interest and made me want to learn more about photography..

I'll also look into community classes in our area..

Three books I can recommend are:.

The first two have a fair amount of overlap so one of the two is fine I bought the digital book because it went deep enough into exposure and had information on more topics..

I'd think of luminous landscape's site as a bit advanced to start with. Maybe start with DPReview's learn/glossary and a simple photography book. However, it's very good stuff when you're ready for it..

"Perfect Digital Photography" by Jay Kinghorn & Jay Dickman 2005 is a great book. It starts pretty simple even discussing what to look for in a camera (when purchasing/deciding). But goes through serious post-processing techniques and composition and exposuring as well..

It's a great all-in-one book, pretty comprehensive... Maybe almost too much for some peoples' taste?.

Athttp://www.photo.net there's a lot of quite good, low-level information as well!.

The guides (http://www.photo.net/learn/) really provide you with some good tips to start off with, taking you step-by-step through the essentials of making photographs..

Pay attention to what Leonard said by the way: my girlfriend isn't better than I am, but does sneak away with my camera every time I'm off-guard .

Hmm, maybe. Sometimes it's nice to have things that are just your own, too.Rob.

Bill,.

Not sure if any local commnity colleges have non credited courses. They tend to be less expensive and you get some hands on experience too. Sometimes you get to demo equipment and you get a feel for things you don't own..

Good luck!Mike.

Just starting out and having fun at it!.

I have, over the last few months, been (rather slowly, I'm afraid) trying to put together a series of short "modules" of info for beginner photographers who are trying to get started with learning photography..

There's not really that much there yet, but some of the stuff that I have posted may be useful to your girlfriend - and I'd be really interested in getting any feedback from her as to whether she finds it helpful / interesting..

This is the main website address:http://photo.bart-the-gaul.com/.

And this is the sort of "Table of Contents":http://photo.bart-the-gaul.com/.../2007/02/start-here-table-of-contents.html.

So far I've covered the following "modules":(1) General intro(2) The subject(3) Learning to "see".

... and I'm currently working on module (4) which will be an introduction to composition - I am hoping to get that finished and posted within the next week or so..

I'd also be interested in any feedback on subjects that she would like me to cover..

Cheers - I hope this helps is some small way!- Bart..

I have a website that I created for the students in my digital photography classes that I teach locally. I have a lot of links and resources for beginners as well as intermediate students, and many resources for Photoshop and some for Elements, and other resources such as slide show software..

I also have some hand-picked books listed at amazon.Judy Howle.

I am new to this site, was recommended by a bloke at the local camera shop and it's terrific! Anyway, this thread caught my eye as I have grappled with the issue of my girlfriend getting into things like photography and golf. It's all good as far as I'm concerned except for two things - one already mentioned is she'll probably end up better than me at both and I'll feel increasingly worthless! The other, more worrying, is that she'll finally discover where all my money is going! Admit it we've all done it - that new lens/putter that we 'undervalue' by a couple of hundred bucks! I for one can live with the guilt...

That may be of some help..

The first is an easy to understand tutorial by Bill Huber of the Olympus Talk Forum. ( Click on the Thumbnails ).

This site allows you to compare/practice settings..

And finally this is an online site that has fairly comprehensive chapters that can be printed and kept for later reference. (click on each chapter and there will be subcategories.).
