The S602 has been dicontinnued so prices drop.

If you don't need the VGA movie look at the S5000. Personally I am reading here to make up my mind between the S602 and S5000...

Hi there,.

I got the S7000 from best buy for 699. That is a great price for a 6 megapixel camera. The canon G5 goes for that much now, and it is a 5 megapixel camera. The canon G3 is a way better model than the G5. But anyways, the Fuji S7000 is a great camera and I am enjoying it thoroughly. There is noise in some cases but you can work around it.

It is definitely a good upgrade from the S602...

I bought the S7000 just the other day and was impressed at it. Everything was perfect except for the image noise that was present sometimes especially when you take a picture of the sky at daylight. It seems to me that this noise is due jpeg compression because when I tried capturing the same image using RAW format and converting it to tiff on the PC the noise was drastically reduced. I sent an email to fujifilm and ask them why they removed different quality settings and if the firmware on the s7000 can be change so as to include different quality settings to control jpeg compression. Havent receive any response yet. Maybe you can email them too so that our noise concerns on this camera would be addressed ASAP...

Just picked up the S7000 and while I was concerned about the high compression JPEG and noise issues I must say I'm very pleased at this point about my purchase. $699 from Best Buy - now I ned to learn the ins and outs of this (my first) digital camera!.

Caveat on the Fuji S7000 - concerning RAW converter - NOT! Fuji has dropped the ball big time with the S7000 RAW converter. The purpose of a RAW converter is to allow the user to make alterations to the file BEFORE conversion. All major manufacturers who have included this ability in their line have converters which let one adjust white balance, saturation, sharpness, etc., etc., "before" converting. Fuji has chosen to do two things which make no sense to me at all. First, they over compress the jpg files so that a six megapixel capture results in a file size of about 1.5 megapixels. This results in excessive noise and artifacts.

Second, their RAW converter is nothing more than a glorified means of saving file storage space on the media. The "converter" does nothing more than "convert" the RAW image to an 8 bit (no choice, no 16 bit) tiff file of about 32 megabytes. There is no provision whatsoever for adjusting anything before converting. The word is that Fuji will offer a RAW converter (pretty expensive one too) in the near future which will allow these actions for several of their cameras including the S7000. Personally, I think this is nothing less than dishonesty on a grand level..

I will have my s7000 next week, while I am a current owner of s602z.

I love everything of s602z, and I heard about the noise issue and all the "weird" coupon about it. However, with the unlimited length vga movie in 640x480, and 6x optical with 6 mp in a price of around 600 USD street price, it is a good deal. Regarding the RAW format,.

Photoshop and paint shop pro can convert them, we dont need to use converter, as a software engineer for years and a photoshop fans, as long as fuji did not do any compression and left the RAW file intact,.

I think we can deal with it, now I am worry about the NOISE that may NOT be related to the compression. Can it be the fact that there is a problem in the 4th generation Super CCD that when they combine the image in 2 layers, mess up somehow ? hmmm ... I still need to research more on the camera when I get it .... I can write a coupon in Japanese and ask for firmware upgrade in Japanese and send directly to fuji in japan if I need to... happy s7000 alien - a picture I took with s602 ... Attachments:.

"Regarding the RAW format,.

Photoshop and paint shop pro can convert them, we dont need to use converter, as a software engineer for years and a photoshop fans, as long as fuji did not do any compression and left the RAW file intact,..." That's just the problem - PhotoShop "can't" convert the RAW file. The Adobe RAW converter has no clue about this format, neither does PaintShop Pro..... Try it for yourself - I have.... Maybe I was not completely clear on this. I HAVE the camera here in my hand. I have tried multiple RAW converters - presently there is no way to do ANYTHING except convert the file with the included converter to an 8 bit tiff.

Even major distributors like B&H were "expecting" it to be different. Here is a quote directly from their current 3 page description of the S7000:.

......

"RAW mode lets you adjust image quality parameters such as bit depth, white balance, contrast, sharpness, and color saturation which can then be applied to the RAW data with bundled software.".

...... Even Fuji's U.S. technical support team was perplexed and didn't know this. Bad Fuji - Bad, Bad............ Lin..
