The fuji finepix 6800 tempts me to buy. I have been looking seriously at the canon G1 but have really wanted a pocket sized camera which the G1 is not. Does anyone care to comment on the comparison of these two cameras?..
I have a 4700 and will upgrade to a 6800 despite one major fault shared by both. In a dark room, the flash images are exposed perfectly but are out of focus. This spoils those shots. Manual focus is useless because it is too dark to see and the display is so small. You do get a warning but a better manual focus like most Canons have would solve the problem. Even a manual zone focus (3', 6', 9', 12') would be workable...
It seems that many digitals have some problem focusing in darkened rooms... Some are complained about more than others. The reason is that most models use a contrast detection focusing method and when you don't have much light you also don't have much in the way of contrast. As you suggest, manual focusing with a distance scale on the display can be a big help. Some other solutions are employed by a few manufacturers, like using a focusing lamp or LED in low light situations or an active infrared focusing system. I think the Olympus E-10 may be one of the few(maybe the only one?) which uses both an IR and contrast detecting system.
I also recall seeing that you can disable the IR system(in the E-10 manual?) in case of problems with a particular focusing situation(shooting through glass or "transparent" surfaces?) I think some of the Canons have the focus lamp or just use an IR system. I'd like to see these types of focusing aids or systems present in more digital cameras. I imagine they're most often left out because they probably cost more than contrast detection...
Unfortunately, I had to give the FinePiy 6800 back to the dealer just one day after I bought it. I simply cannot live with the kind of distortion the lens produces, left aside the bad image quality in the corners...If you want to take pictures with this camera, stay away from ANY straight line in your composition!.
Sorry, I'm an architect..
You may have acted a bit rashly. My daughter, also an architect (although she practices law now), deals with the distortion problem on her Leica/Fuji by using Photogenetics or the Andromeda Lens Doc filter and the "skew" feature in Photoshop. You may have to use the latter in any event to correct "keystoning" if your camera is not perfectly aligned in all three axes...
Is it me or do the corners of the images taken with the FinePix 6800.
Look out of focus? Like this one:.

It's not you, it's the lens, see my comment earlier.....
Yes, 100 % agreed. Only last week a few shots of Big Ben and the Houses of parliament in London showed me what distortion occurs to verticals near the image edges. At least I have managed to correct the shots using Photoshop afterwards...
I am a doctor and plans to use the Fine Pix 6800 for taking patients and small frame scan pictures 10 x 6 cm with small words (with lighting from the view box). Has anyone used the camera for such purposes. If not, can somebody give me some advice? Thank you...
Has anyone used the webcam feature on this camera?.
Does it work well... , I know it works with netmeeting, how about ICUII? What size pics and frame rate?.
Thanks.
Andrew..
I want to upgrade frm the 4700. The 6800 sounds enticing, but I wonder how the optics compare to the 4700. Are there any other reviews available that you can steer me to?..
The battery for the Kodak DC4800 is the same as the Fuji NP-80 for the 6800. Kodak has it, and the fast charger, available as a set on their website (shop@kodak) for only $59.95 (#8039851). I got one and it works...
I first bought the Fuji 700MX over 2 years ago. What a great little camera! (I am a qualified photographer although not in the trade...in IT!).
2 weeks ago I upgraded to the 6800Zoom. Again...great little camera! Colours great, anything I want to change I can do so by using Photoshop.......no problem whatsoever, best 500 I have spent!..
I bought a fuji 6800 PAL version. Does anyone know if there is a hidden menu to switch it to NTSC??.
Thanks...brian..
I had a 2700 for a year and took 8500+ photos (not a typo), Sadly it was destroyed and I had to wait 6 months for the 6800z. It was worth it the LiIon battery is great 200+ photos on a charge (VGA mixed flash and LCD). I would highly recomend it, I camera you can take any where is a camera you take everywhere (see beginning of post about being destroyed). Note I take 1000's of photos at VGA rez since I rarely if ever print them (e-mail, web gallery, slide shows on my laptop) and find some of the effects one can get from the slow shutter to be beautiful, but I went to art school. -ray..
Well, I have been very happy with the Finepix 6800. I have been a user of digicams for 2 years now and have had 4 different digi-cams and I currently also use a Nikon D1. The colors the Super CCD are very good and the images I have been able to reproduce have really pleased me. I bought this camera to take snapshots with and to take advantage of the other additional features it offers, like the webcam. It performs very well in my eyes and is a pretty good buy, considering the extras you get with the camera that most other only wish to have!..
