I am seeing the same thing. What's up with this?..
The 2.whatever is the megapixels on the lcd screen that you look at to take a picture, so the resolution on the screen is not what it will be in a print. the Print should be better...am I correct?? This is my understanding of the ads..DEB..
In other words, the Monitor on the camera has 2.4 million dots to make up the picture you see on it....the camera takes and records a picture at 4.whatever million dots per inch. got that? I could be wrong, would not be the first or last time, but I am pretty sure that is the way it works. So far I am waiting delivery on mine, and it is hard to find much on the web about it, most camera shops don't even carry the 4900. What is up with that???..
Fujifilm uses the SuperCCD technology in Fine Pix 4900Z. It means that the cam has 2.4 million pixels in an interwoven pattern, but you can get 4,3 pixels image file size (like hardware interpolation). See SuperCCD on www.fujifilm.co.uk or other Fujifilm's sites...
You are right. Super CCDs are a gimmick. They never work any better than their actual resolution...
Super CCD technology is controversial but it does do a bit better job in boosting resolution. Not as high as Fuji claims, but most all reviewers have seem some increase in image quality. Yes, it does do a software interpolation on the CCd image but then, all digital cameras interpolate to some degree. The high end Nikon 1D series camera interpolate as well, effectively increasing either the horizontal or vertical resolution....I forget which....but no one complains about that being a gimmick in a $5000 DSLR. So, if you are happy with the images, then enjoy them. Don't worry resolution.
If you really want to know how SCCD technolgy works, www.dpreview.com has thread ad nauseaum on this topic and it is disucssed on the Fuji US and UK websites.....trsut me though, unless you are an electrical engineer who specializes in CCD, it is not for everyone. I'm just happy with my images! Why no stores carry the 4900, because it has been replaced twice since it's introduction, first with the 6900 and now with the S602. It is two and a half year old technolgy, but it is still a very nice camera. If it can be had for a good price, it is well worth the money...
