filter for Nikon D40
I'm new to the digital camera world. I'd like to get a filter to protect my lens. A friend said to get a UV filter. Is that a recommended "beginners" filter? How do I find out what size of filter will fit my lens in case I want to order one on-line? thanks, Mike..

For instance, is the start of another "what filters should I get" thread. (July 20).

And so forth..

As for what will fit, your lens should mention the thread diameter on it, in millimeters. It wouldn't surprise me if this were denoted with aYou didn't mention what lens you have, so people would be guessing if they gave an exact diameter...

Turn over the cap, it says the size of the filter you should get..

If you're shooting with a 18-55 don't bother. A good filter will cost about half of what a replacement lens will cost you and you run a very increased risk of lens flaring and other nasty things.Don't wait for the Nikon D-whatever, have fun now!http://www.flickr.com/photos/j_wijnands/..

I just ordered a Hoya UV HMC Super 52mm which I hope is "a good filter". It costs approx 1/6th of the 18-55mm kit lens. Ok, the 18-55mm lens is pretty cheap. But with the UV-filter in place I don't need to care so much when I have to clean dust/fingerprints (!) etc. from the front element (which now is the UV-filter instead)..

A hardly touched 18-55 costs me 75 euros. I'm curious where you have found a super HMC for 1/6th of htat..

And how do you get prints on your lens/filter in the first place?.

The kit lens 18-55mm goes for 119.99 new here in US .You can get the Hoya UV HMC Super 52mm filter new on Ebay for 19.99.That would be 1/6 the price of the lens...
