Extesion tube on a Macro lens, make sense?
Hi there,.

Would there be any real benefit to use an extension tube on a 1:1 Macro lens?.

From the readings I've done seems extension tubes are mainly used on non-Macro lens to get the close-up effect..

I have a 60mm f/2.8 Macro lens, and came across a good deal on a 25mm extension tube, hence the question..

Thanks,Eric..

Most macro lenses will only get you to 1:1 (magnification.) However, it may be required to go closer. In these cases extension tubes are used..

But it will bring you really close to the front of the lens where lighting becomes a problem. Still worth doing in my opinion.A member of the rabble in good standing...

DOF is going to be paper thin. You'll need great light, a rock solid tripod (hand holding is near impossible) and a non moving subject. Even the slightest movement of the camera or subject will cause your focus to be off..

Extreme macro like this is tough.Chefziggyhttp://www.pbase.com/chefziggy/lecream.

To summarize for the OP, you'll need to stop down a few stops, perhaps down to f/11 in order to find adequate DOF to keep the small subject in focus. In doing so you'll need extra light, or a tripod and a slow-moving/non-moving subject..

With an extension tube I suspect even f11 will be pretty darn thin. (I'll have to try that.).

The shot below was at f40 without an extension tube. (Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro lens) And that's still not much DOF. The crayons are already getting soft about midway back..
