What does a 1x extender do? Or, what does it look like?..
Why do you need a teleconverter? What are you shooting, you say national? but national what, and you can't get by with a 300 f2.8? Teleconverters can be stacked, but :.
1. using a TC disables AF, in best case it limits AF to F/5.62. TC will decrease IQ, but you decide if it's a problem or not..
Some will say that the 5D is to slow for action shots (3 fps),but the MF will probably be more limiting..
However it's not impossible once you are well experienced ....

I use 300 f/2.8 for sports, often with 1.4x teleconverter, occasionally use 2x. Never stack 2 together. But I mostly shoot kids sports, up to HS level. The fields are mostly smaller..
300+2x makes AF slower. 300+1.4x still focuses fast enough. If you really have to stack 2 teleconverters, it's probably time to move up to 400 f/2.8 or 500 f/4..
5D is not a very fast camera. But if you are good, it's an OK backup. I'd suggest a 1dM2 or 1dM3 will get you higher %..

My rule of thumb is shooting across the field I should be able to shoot kids very tight with landscape orientation. Any closer I switch to portrait..

Should also think b4 I respond. Across the field I mean side to side, not end to end. For kids u16 and u19 it means 400mm with 20d (1.6 crop ratio). Or 5d w/ 300mm, you need a 2x..
