Exposure Indicator
Hi,.

I've been using my Fuji s602z for a few years and always shoot in manual mode, where I use the Exposure Indicator as a guide to setting up each shot. For those who haven't used the camera, it's basically a meter to show the predicted exposure on the current settings..

I'm currently looking for a new camera along the lines of the Canon S5, Panasonic FZ18/50 etc and none of them seem to have an indicator. I assume they have some sort of light meter or information along these lines, otherwise taking photos would be a little hit and miss!.

So, my question is, for these types of cameras, what is the recommend (best?) way of ensuring exposure is roughly in the right place?.

I do not know any of the cameras you mention but it might help to mention that most DSLRs have an analogue display which when in Manual tells you how far the meter thinks you are off the right exposure by deviating from the central "correct" position..

If they have a manual mode, then they have some means of indicating exposure bias. The Canon S5 IS does have a manual mode and has the standard needle and scale model. 2 stops with marks every 1/3 stop displayed on the LCD..

My Fuji F31fd has an M mode, but as the manual says M is an automatic mode.

Thanks for your responses. Reading around, some people mention that learning to read the histogram can help - what are your thoughts on this?..

I often use the histogram for setting manual exposure. It is probably more useful than a simple exposure indicator because it provides a lot more information.Joel Orlinsky.

If it is a live histogram, then yes, there is much more information than from the simple needle/scale display. If it is a histogram of the shot just taken, then you can use that information to correct a poor exposure on the next shot..

Thanks, I've had a look around at how to read the histogram and it seems to be a very useful tool. Most cameras in this class seem to have live histogram functionality, so I'll start to make use of it.  ..
