Many people add the E to the end as a mistake. Their fingers are just moving too quickly BTW, when you really want to impress people, you call is "GLASS" (LOL)Warm regards,DOFThere is no satisfactory substitute for excellenceDr. Arnold O. Beckman..
I've also seen the misuse of "len" as singular, and "lens" as plural .

Thanks all for the quick clarification.... thought I was losing it...
Those Romans were so darn literal! Because the plural in English is "lenses", some folks are tempted to make a back-formation and drop the "s" to get the singular: "lense." Big mistake!.

I wonder if those folks also spell these with that logic; brushe, sandwiche, boxe, mothe, watche, monthe, dishe, bushe, dresse, dishe, etc. .

Both are correct, though I think "lense" is an older more British spelling. At least I rememeber seeing it spelled "lense" rather than "lens" in old books, especially those published outside of the US..
Come to think of it, I think several words got their current popular spelling due to possible errors in Microsoft Word's spelling dictionary...

Not sure what era you're referring to. I've never seen it spelled "lense" in Britain, even in old books. Of course going back into historical usage, many words were spelled differently, or with multiple variations. It seems we may be entering another such era as spelling receives less emphasis in our schools nowadays, and creative use of the alphabet is encouraged..

"Len" for a single lens, and "Leni" for more than one ..

Is it a lens or a lense?.
Is it a common spelling error, or a geographical/language thing?.
I love this one! Especially after seeing ten posters all getting it wrong..
According to everything from the Oxford English Dictionary on down, either spelling is acceptable and correct. I won a large bar bet with this one..
Main Entry: "lens"Variant: also "lense" /'lenz/.

Actually, I thought of that one, but didn't want to turn this into a political thing .

We can keep this up all week if you like. .
Merriam-Webster's Dictionary -Main Entry: lensVariant: also lense /'lenz/Function: noun.
1 : a curved piece of glass or plastic used singly or combined in eyeglasses or an optical instrument (as a microscope) for forming an image.
2 : a device for directing or focusing radiation other than light (as sound waves, radio microwaves, or electrons).
3 : a highly transparent biconvex lens-shaped or nearly spherical body in the eye that focuses light rays entering the eye typically onto the retina, lies immediately behind the pupil, is made up of slender curved rod-shaped ectodermal cells in concentric lamellae surrounded by a tenuous mesoblastic capsule, and alters it's focal length by becoming more or less spherical in response to the action of the ciliary muscle on a peripheral suspensory ligament lensed adjective lensless adjective.

But I will give you this: "Although the variant spelling lense is listed in some dictionaries, the standard spelling for those little disks that focus light is 'lens.'".

Two variants of the same word used for two different connotative purposes in writing. If the search feature was up I'd post at length my previous post to this..
Using "lense" as opposed to "lens" in a sentence can convey an entirely different meaning, in the same way that using "theatre" can convey an entirely different meaning as "theater.".
