It never harmed my cameras and flash guns. I'd tape different thicknesses of tissue paper over the flash lens to suit..

Even the point & shoot flash can generate a good amoint of heat, so be careful of repetitive use wihout giving it a chance to cool down. I wouldn't tape anything directly onto the flash area. Overheating might change the nature of the adhesive making it hard to get off. On a pop up flash like my Panasonic DMC-LX2, I have used a ping pong ball with bottom cut out, and I crafted a little enveope out of white translucent vinyl. and duct tape The air space is enough for the heat dissipation on the rare occasions that I diffuse the on camera flash. Hope this helps..

My flash isn't pop up. I won't be doing 'repetitive' shooting - just the occasional bug/flower/fungi shot..
What would someone recommend to easily diffuse the flash of a non pop up flash?..
You can get a white shower curtain liner at most dollar stores. Using scissors and tape craft a little envelope or bubble out of the white vinyl. It is flexible enough to do a little softbox, and out of the shower liner, you'll have more than enough material to experimant with. The bigger the device you craft, the softer your light will be. I also have old Oly C5050 (non pop up) and have done the tissue paper route. It does cut down the output somewhat, but there are still hot spots and rather harsh shadows.
In a pinch you can use kleenex type tissue. I have had better luck holding 4 inches in front of flash rather than putting it right on the flash. Pink klneenex might be interestingit will change the color of the light slightly..

I use black electrical tape to reduce the light output from my camera and my slave flash all the time. In the macro mode I cover the flash window about 75%, I use a Casio Z-120. There is no residue or problems with overheating from just a few shots in a row..

Max of 2 shotsin a minute using this method.
