d40 vs k100d
I'm about to buy a dslr. I'm a complete noobie and I really need a camera mainly to learn. I know the nikon d40 needs AF-S lenses and I'm alright with. I don't mind spending some extra to get VR lenses because they seem to provide quality for the money..

But I noticed that the pentax has some good features like image stabilization..

Since they cost about the same in my country could you please advise me about which one provides best bang for the buck..

Pls keep in mind that i'm a real noob and user friendliness is a must..

By the way, i'm looking for an all purpose camera. I don't realy shoot sport events.

Thx in advance..

I'm interested in what current owners of these cams think. A DSLR I could pocket is something I'd consider buying later...

I have the Pentax and have used the D40 and like them both, but I bought the Pentax because I have three other Pentax bodies and a bunch of lenses. Starting out, I think I would be more tempted by the Nikon. It is just a sexier camera, what with it's fast silent focus and wonderful small personal feel to it. The in camera image stabilazation is definitely a plus as is the versatility of lens choice with the Pentax. I think the Pentax is capable of a little greater JPG detail too. The Nikon images at higher resolution have a bit of a washed over blended look to them - smoothed, if you will.Dave Lewis..

Well, you can't pocket either unless you have a hell of a pocket. That said, the Pentax with a pancake lens could be pocketed, I guess. I never thought to do so. I carry mine in the large back pocket of a nice roomy wide fanny pack that uses an eight inch wide foam padded belt as a base that is secured with a really big snap buckle. You can't even tell the camera is back there.Dave Lewis..

Hi.

Actually The Pentax and a short prime lense does fit in a jacket pocket..

I even get my Ist*D into my jeans pocket (large male with fairly loose jeans)That said I would not put my K100d in my pocket, just in case..

I do not have a limited pancake, but one of the smaller ones with a D/Ds/DL/K100d would be no problem for me in a coat/jacket or jeans..

The new Oly is smaller still so may be truly pocketable....not sure about the lens size though..

I reccomend to the op you try both cameras (and any others you can find) to see what feels right for you..

.....If you haven't already done it, do yourself a favor and carefully read the DPReview reviews on these two cameras. Phil Askey does a comprehensive series of tests on every DSLR that he reviews and there's more unbiased and useful information for you there than you'll likely find from many of the lurkers here on this open forum..

The fast focus on the D40 is due to the lenses. You can't use AF with a lens that doesn't have it's own motor. The D40 has no internal AF motor. That limits a user somewhat in lens choices and steers towards the more higher-priced lenses. That could be a deal-breaker for me. I have a D50 and my primary lens is a very nice Tokina 28-70mm f2.8 that does not have it's own motor.

Between the two, I'd choose the Pentax if I were buying tomorrow. It's a great value and the in-camera IS is a nice feature. My humble photo gallery: http://ntotrr.smugmug.com.
