I assume constant aperture means that the lens is F/2.8 at 28mm and 75mm (and all points in between) It does not mean you cannot change the aperture on the lens..
So it would work just like any other lens...
Good point. I didn't think about it that way. F2.8 constant doesn't mean F2.8 fixed (if there is such a thing). Thanks for sorting that out for me. I feel much more comfortable with it now...

That's a lot of camera....
Rule 1. Read the manual.Rule 2. Read the manual again.Rule 3. Get Thom Hogan's D200 e-book and read it.Rule 4. Repeat rule 3.Rule 5. Shoot lots and re-read both manuals as specified above..
To answer your question, 'constant f/2.8 means that the effective aperture doesn't alter as the lens is zoomed, not that it's unchangeable by the user/camera. The lens aperture is controlled by the D200 body, even on (most) lenses that have manual aperture rings. If you have an older lens with a manual aperture ring, you need to set the aperture to the smallest size (largest number), so that the body can open it as required. There ARE exceptions to this rule, but you'll probably never meet them. I'm pretty sure that all of this is in the manual..

Everyone, everywhere, has to do everything for a first time. There is no failure in failure, only in failing to learn...
The previous posters are completely right!.
And by the way: that's not a wrong lens at all if you're just starting and are on a bit of a budget. Good choice! There's no problem so big that you can't run away from it!..

Rule 6. After six months.... Read the manual AGAIN![It will make so much more sense, this time!].

Thanks so much for all the advice. I have done a lot of research and know that it is a lot of camera but that is what I wanted. I will get and read the book suggested and will practice (take pictures..LOL) a lot..
Thanks also on the confirmation of the lens choice. I read a lot of reviews to figure it out. Other lenses I'll be doing will be:.
12-24mm Tonika for Landscapes and wide angle group shots.
55-200mm Nikon VR for a longer zoom. Would prefer to do the 70-300VR but once again budget has to come in somewhere. Maybe once I make a little bit of money I can get a better zoom..
Thanks again and I can't wait to start snapping pictures..
Rick..
