Computer Freezes Up with New Camera
If there is something below a newbie/novice in both computers and cameras, it is I!!! I beg for patience as I ask for help..

Upon plugging my new Olympus E510 into my computer to load my photos, the computer (laptop) freezes up as soon as the camera is turned on. I previously (recently) had an E300 and had no problems loading my pix onto my laptop..

A friend who knows computers can find nothing wrong with mine, nor a storage issue. We are both frustrated at not being able to discover why this is happening... and I've not yet been able to view my photos:-(.

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. TIA!.

All cameras will at some point give you problems if you use USB or firewire-cable to transfer pictures directly from the camera to the PC..

The simplest, best and cheapest solution: get a fast cardreader. They are much more stable and reliable, usually much faster and will set you back no more than an lousy $ 15.00.There's no problem so big that you can't run away from it!..

Your best bet is to get a card reader - SanDisk make good ones (there re others as well), but stay away from cheap ones - nasty. Much quicker than direct from the camera, it doesn't flatten the camera batteries and it goes a long way towards eliminating transfer errors..

The problem you're currently having may be related to the setting on the camera for the USB connectivity. Check the manual and make sure yours is set correctly. I'm not an Oly shooter, so I don't know where in the manual or the menu that setting is, but that would be my first place to look.Rob.

Everyone, everywhere, has to do everything for a first time. There is no failure in failure, only in failing to learn...

Thanks so much for your quick reply. I'm sorry I forgot to mention in my original post that after freezing the computer up during the first attempt to load pix, I then tried to load them with my card reader... and the computer froze up with that as well:-(IrishHound..

Well, if both the US-connection with the camera nd the cardreader failed, that could also indicate that the data on the card somehow got corrupted. There's no problem so big that you can't run away from it!..

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. Since the camera, the card reader and a jump drive are all making the computer freeze up it looks like it's a problem with my laptop:-(.

Thanks again-DeirdreIrishHound..

Diedre,.

Can you view the photos on your LCD on camera? If not you have corrupted card..

Can you try photos from another card on your notebook? I doubt there is a problem with your notebook because it worked fine with your older camera..

Even fairly new cards can get corrupted. I have one that is barely a month old - a Kingston Elite Pro 2GB that went a couple of days ago. Never had it happen before. Fortunately I only lost a couple of test photos..

It sounds to me you have a driver issue, most dig cams come with a CD, with the driver on, this should be installed on you PC first..

If you did not get a CD, I would go to the Camera WEB site, and download the driver from there, and try again.Should work OK thenGood Luck.

Diedre,.

A further thought. What size of card are you using? Which sort of card? Compact Flash or XD? It may be that:a) the 510 is set to the wrong sort of USB output AND.

B) your card reader does not have the most up to date driver covering the size of XD card you are now using..

First, let me ask if you have a Mac. If so I might be of some help. Since that's not likely, have you tried the card reader on someone elses computer?.

Second, what kind of card is it? More importantly, what kind of card reader is it. Please fill out the form I've just posted... .
